RM Updates for "JP1 - Just How Easy Is It?"

Post by gfb107 »

I've put together some text and screen captures for "JP1 - Just How Easy Is It" that use RM in place of KM. I only wrote up sections 5 and 6.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

I expect beginners will be confused by seeing all of OBC, EFC and Hex. There ought to be some mention that those are redundant. Such as:

IR's decode displays OBC, Hex Cmd and EFC which are the same command number represented in three different forms. That is intended for use with some target programs (unlike RM) which accepts only one form.

RM's function sheet accepts any one of EFC, OBC or Hex and from that computes the other two. That is intended for use with some sources (unlike IR) which provides only one form.

For common protocols, it doesn't matter which of the three you use to transfer the command numbers from the decode to RM, but it is best to use OBC, because there are certain protocols for certain models of remote where the EFC numbers in upgrades don't match the EFC numbers in decodes.

I will try and look at this sometime soon Greg and let you know if I have any comments or suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to write it, it's much needed.

John, I think your suggestion about explaining the redundancy of OBC, EFC and Hex is a good one.

Since it applies to both KM and RM, I suggest that it go in a section of Rob's original document that doesn't deal specifically with either RM or KM, maybe as part of the introduction to device upgrades.

Greg,

I thought it was good and agree with John's finer points, too (pun intended). But maybe we should explain the big advantage is that you don't need MS Excel. I know that is obvious to all of us, and I actually like Excel, but a lot of people don't have it.

Just a thought :-)

I've made some minor updates based on some of the feedback here. Check it out.
