Did I do something wrong? 6131
Do I need to remove the batteries before connecting to the computer? The first time I tried using IR with my new modified 6131 the batteries leaked all over like they were being charged from the computer. The remote was working fine for days until I connected it. Now I have a corroded mess. Did I do something wrong? Btw IR was able to download and upload to it correctly until the acid destroyed it.
I think something was miswired or shorted in modifying the 6131 or in making the JP1 cable.
A JP1 connection to a two battery remote might try to charge the batteries from the PC, but that is through the 1K resistor. Batteries (even non rechargeables) don't normally leak just from reverse current. It takes enough reverse current to cause internal heating. How long was it connected before it leaked? You description makes it sound fast.
I think it is more likely that some misconnection shorted the batteries, rather than tried to chage them and the heat of the rapid discharge caused the leak.

I'm not sure about the wiring. I bought the remote and cable from Rob and like I said the remote worked fine before I connected it to the computer and even then IR was able to connect. Yes it happened quickly, not more that 10-15 min. then it stopped working. I've pulled the remote apart and cleaned it. I had to remove the eprom to get it to work again. Some of the green solder mask is now gone and other areas such as the button pads look like they are damaged. I'm sure it's working will be short lived.

I've had this happen to me when I've accidentally left a remote connected to the cable for a long time (eg, overnight) but it definitely should not happen in such a short time.
