Few questions regarding URC 8800

Finally got to do some macros and have encounter a few short commings with this remote (and me) that I need to work around.

First the IR and urc 8800 learning issue , I can't use IR to program IL-6L keys so I had to create key moves for my RPTV inputs (previously on learn keys), is this MOD available a simple software DIY or hardware mod? where can I find some info links?

After creating the RPTV inputs keymoves now with IR I can create and attach a 'dvd setup" macro to the Shift DVD key (remote only allows the Macro & Macro2 keys)but is not working, I study Rob's IR set up file and explanations notes and he's able to do this in his 1994 remote. Is the URC 8800 able to attach macros to the 'shift' device keys? My 'all devices Power toggle' macro attached to 'shift' (setup key) Power works but not any others.

since the urc 8800 has a 50 bytes upgrade device limitation I created a second upgrade with a few codes for the 'tuner' section of my Receiver, I made sure the key mapping didn't overlap each others, but it doesn't work they conflict, apparently is one upgrade or the other not both, on the KM readme file I find this info
"Unfortunately, the only known workaround for this limitation is
to create multiple upgrades of less than 50 bytes each. "

How do I combine this two upgrades in IR?

I know there are simple answers to this q's probably addressed many time before here, so maybe some one has some bookmarks of old posting I could use. After doing many searches the URC 8800 doensn't come up to often. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if you can place macros on the shifted device buttons. Try the same macro on some other shifted button to see if it works. If it does, then the 8800 probably doesn't support macros on the device buttons (shifted or not).

You can't "combine" them... what you need to do is create 2 unique upgrades (each must have its own unique device type/setup code) and assign them to different device buttons on the remote.

Thanks Mark for your quick reply. I did try the MACRO and shift MACRO keys and they work fine, so it looks like the Device buttons don't support macros.

Ok, I'll play with this, the 'tuner' definitions have a different code (remote native 0013) I guess it will be 1003 for upgrade but I'm maxed out with devices (using all eight). I read about ways to use hidden "devices" but I'm no way near that level of understanding yet, like What are this 'VIRTUAL_(DEVICES)" keys under IR Macros tab for?

I'm back trying to finish off programming this remote.

I need some help/suggestions regarding VPT and 8800 behaviors I can't figure out.

VPT works fine for TV,VCR, CATV/SAT, but it doesn't work for DVD and AMP(HD-STB), I used IR and created Keymoves to my Tuner for this devices but they don't work either (double checked VOL & Mute Tuner's codes),also try it after disabeling VPT with no luck, under KM the only common feature between this two devices (DVD & AMP) is that they lack VOls and mute keys definitions (keymoves were created on IR).

any ideas why keymoves are not working even though display shows AMP/Tuner when pressing Vol keys?

Or why VPT works for all other devices (display reads tuner)except for DVD and Amp?

I don't recall which device modes are covered by VPT in the URC-8800, but it's possible that not all device modes are covered.

As for the keymoves, maybe you encoded them incorrectly. I would suggest that you do the keymoves on the remote instead (ie, copy the volume buttons from one mode to another) as that will virtually guarantee that you end up with the correct codes.

As will all posts like this, we would need to see your IR.exe file to acurately tell you what you did wrong.

Thanks Robman, The VPT section on the original manual only mentions TV,VCR, CBL/SAT so I guess it doesn't work for DVD, Aux1, or AMP, although I don't see why "vid acc" (HD-STB) duped from CBL/SAT wouldn’t work.

I went ahead and created key moves on the remote and they don't work either, (tested with VPT on or off) like I said before display reads ‘Amp/Tuner' when using VOL keys under DVD and AMP (vid acc).

uploaded remote info to IR to take a look and all VOL/MUTE functions are programmed using use same EFC (or hex?) code (016) , something I don't really understand why yet, then created and tested again an AMP/VID/ACC key move on IR using the TUNER codes but still doesn't work, this is my current IR file uploaded to the JP1 diagnostic area. If you could take a look at it I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Please read the sticky that explains how to post links to Yahoo files next time (I fixed your link).

I edited the file, see if this works: Mackado2_8800.IR

Rob, I swear I did read the sticky but for an hour I couln't get the edited url link to find my JP1 file, Yahoo gave me the 'file not found error ' everytime, I must to had something wrong but couldn't figure out what, this was my first time ever using the 'URL ID hiding' trick in all my years of posting on forums. :P

Anyways, I loaded your edit and still doesn't work, the 8800 behaves just like before, very weird, maybe this observation will help, at one point a while back during my initial programming learning curve keymoves to DVD and AMP did work, but I believe(don't recall now exactly) that after programing on the remote a new 'Home theater" setting the key moves (or VPT) never worked again for this devices, I discovered that everytime an IR 'upload to remote' is performed any new HT key settings are errased and defaults back to TV, except the the 'HT POWER' macro(key 57) that still mantains it's programming. (planning to wait until finished to setup Video control to AMP (STB) and VOl to TUNER)right now the HT vol also displays AMP/TUNER but it has no effect.

Should I reset or 'clear all' (or your 972/MFG RESET instructions) and load again?

will this erase my 'Learned commands also? The manual makes no mention of Learn commands.

Ok, I did the unlock/972 and MFG reset and uploaded file again and nothing, did it again without activating VPT (just in case)and nothing again, tried again manually adding Keymoves on the remote, no luck. I suspect this Pioneer upgrade code (2004) is the culprit, with the old code (0013)vpt worked fine for DVD at least, unfortunately this code is missing many features but I'll give a try on KM and see what I can do.

could he use an extender to put macros on the device buttons?

I think you are misunderstanding some of the basic concepts. Just because your remote only has 8 device BUTTONS, doesn't mean you are limited to loading just 8 device UPGRADES. What Mark was suggesting is that you create 2 upgrades, where one of them is assigned to a device button and the other is used just for key moves (to fill in the gaps from the 1st upgrade).

The important part wasn't the "hiding" aspect of it, but rather the URL itself. If you simply do a "copy" on the link and post that, the URL will start with something like: http://f5.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/YPbvQKoD-PO (etc). These URLs are temporary in nature, so while they might work when you first post them, they won't work for other people. That's why I wrote up the sticky thread (as clearly as I could) in an attempt to help people post good links, but so far the success rate has been very low. :(

To post a good link, simply copy the main URL from the address line of your browser (ie, the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/files ... is%20Area/ part), then paste the name of your file at the end of it (ie, the mackado_8800.ir part). Remember that files names are case sensitive, your file ends in a lower case .ir whereas your original link contained an upper case .IR

What did you use to create that upgrade? Could you post your KM file into the Diagnosis Area (and try posting a link). It might be a better idea to split this into the seperate Pioneer device codes.

Absolutely.

Rob, thanks for pointing out what I did wrong when posting my file to JP1, it had to be the 'case sensitive’ issue, I must admit that after a few hours of messing around with all this my brain becomes a big knot and shuts down

Hmmm, Ok, I tried many things using this Pioneer Elite code 2004 (Amp & separate Tuner) found in the JP1 files section except ‘keymoves', finally I just used the "Amp" portion only which worked for most of what I needed.

Unfortunately this 2004 code is the one that is preventing the DVD and AMP devices from executing the 'TUNER' VOL/MUTE keymoves and I don't know why
The Robman wrote:What did you use to create that upgrade? Could you post your KM file into the Diagnosis Area (and try posting a link). It might be a better idea to split this into the separate Pioneer device codes.
I haven’t created any KM upgrades yet, I will work on it today and see.

Last night I changed the TUNER code to built in/internal 0013 code (used before JP1)and VOL/MUTE keymoves created on the remote work fine for DVD/AMP (STB) upgrade devices, I suppose VPT didn't work for this devices because they don't have VOL/MUTE defined keys or may not be part of the VPT mapping. I'm going to see if by using 'advanced codes' for 0013 (listed in your page) I’m able to create a KM upgrade for my Receiver and then create the VOL/MUTE keymoves needed, don’t know yet if this process will work like I envision it, this VPT issue is the only thing preventing me from finishing this setup.

I did read about the 'extenders' but for now I think I can do without them, I don’t need to many MACROS and using the MACRO-SHIFT/MACRO for DVD SETUP and DVD PLAY works fine and is not difficult to remember, the SHIFT/POWER 'all on' MACRO works great too and helps overcome the 15 steps macro limitation, I will use the MACRO2-SHIFT-MACRO2 to set up the HD-STB PLAY and probably CBL/SAT PLAY, by accident I also discovered that by using the 'HOMETHEATHER/POWER MACRO (key 57) I can switch from DVD viewing to HD-STB without problems given that the HT key is programmed to control my AMP(STB).Cool. :P

PS: I detailed all this in the hope that future 8800 JP1 users can benefit from my adventure in JP1 Land.

OK, what am I missing, if you haven't used any KM upgrades yet, what was the "2004" code you were talking about?

He said he hadn't created any upgrades yet.

I'm guessing he used the Pioneer Elite VSX-xxx.txt file. If so, when that file is changed to the 8800 remote, it shows that protocol code is required for the upgrade, but his IR file doesn't contain it, which helps explain at least some of his problems.

Mackado, if you're in fact using the above file for your Tuner, you MUST also copy the Protocol Code and paste it into IR's Protocols tab.

No No, I should have said that I haven't created any new (KM)upgrades from 'scratch', learning commands etc. I HAVE created upgrades for all my devices using the KM files available at JP1.

For my Pioneer Elite I'm using the Pioneer Elite VSX-45TX.zip folder that contains three different files, the 'Combo' is execellent but the VOL/Mute codes didn't work with keymoves for DVD and AMP. Don't know why.

This is the reason I was going to try to create a fresh Pioneer upgrade using the 0013 device code that contains VOL/MUTE codes I know work with the keymoves needed, fortunately I found a ready made upgrade with this codes on JP1, and thanks to Rob's excellent clarification above about using different upgrades to create keymoves for ONE device I was able to upload an upgrade for 0013 code(1013)with the correct VOL/MUTE codes, then created DVD/AMP VOL/MUTE keymoves on IR that are finally working perfectly now. I'm working now on the VCR and SAT is next.

So I'm moving along thanks to you guys, but the learning curve is killing me.
