JP1 Remotes

Hi folks,

Well, I've done a lot of reading on the boards here about the variety of Pioneer protocols and, despite a lot of experimenting, I haven't been able to find the right incantation for my VSX-C301 AV amp. So, I'm hoping someone might see what is going on here.

I've included two different raw data dumps below. For a few of the buttons (the few that decode as single commands, like volume), the basic Pioneer protocol works okay. But most of the buttons on the remote decode as two commands. So, I tried variations on the DVD, DVD2 and 2CMD protocols in RM. No luck. The two dumps below are for buttons that decode as two commands.

That timing data is useless to us, what we would need to see is the decode data that IR displays, better yet, save your IR file in the Diagnosis Area.

It's totally normal for Pioneer to send two signals for some of the buttons on their remotes. Read the section on Pioneer in the protocols-readme file that accompanies KM for more info.

From what I've read on the board, I assumed that some of you could simply "see" the protocols from the timing data pretty much like the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar could see the matrix by looking at the green characters falling down the screen. (bad attempt at geek humour, I know)

From what I've read, I gathered that nearly all of the modern Pioneer protocols sent two signals for most buttons. But, I couldn't find a Pioneer variant that worked (had tried DVD, DVD2, MIX, 2CMD). Thanks for the reference to the protocols-readme file in KM. I'm an RM user (if a non-Microsoft-endorsing option is available, I try and use it) and missed this readme completely. Maybe it could be kept separately in the Help section of the Yahoo files depot as well?

I discovered that RM wasn't determining the right OBC for the first part of the button in 2CMD. When I entered the OBC for both parts of the button (and ignored the EFCs), 2CMD worked well. I guess I hadn't tried the OBC+2CMD combination in my experiments. Your protocols-readme file pointed me in the right direction. Thanks! Jonathan

It might not be RM's fault. The UEI executors for Pioneer signals don't always use the same polarity. By that I mean, while one of them might be LSB-COMP, another might be LSB. What that means to you is that while the OBCs will be consistant regardless of which protocol you select, the EFCs might not.

As for the timing data, it's true, I could decode it by hand if I wanted to, but it's a time consuming process and as I know that IR.exe displays all the info you need, I didn't think it would be a worthwhile use of my time.

If you find that a signal uses multiple OBCs but the device code is constant, then 2CMD is usually the right choice. If all of the buttons use the same device code, it is definitely the right choice, but if some buttons use different device codes, then the 3DEV or 4DEV variants will work better for you. The 3DEV is built into most remotes, so use it if you can, however it doesn't support all OBC combinations, so if you see ERROR displayed when you enter the OBCs in KM, you should switch to the 4DEV version which supports all OBC combinations (as I wrote it!).
