Considering a major debate over IR500 merits and incompatibilities should we (beginner types) use it or is it for now safer to stay with 402's known file formats?

From a pure functionality point of view it matches what 402 does without problems and converts 402 files to 500 file format without a hitch. Also, no changes were made in the interface with RM and KM. So, if you are just using it to create/change an upgrade and upload and download to the remote it works fine.
Today, (since it appears the debate is somewhat over) the only limitations with 500 is if you need to use the saved file as input to an external program like ExtInstall or IRtoWAV it could be a problem since manual manipulation of the file would be required until programs like these are upgraded. How to do that is included in the documentation.
From a "what's the benefit" point of view being able to add notes to your functions and code/read special protocols like DSM's, LKP's and ToadTogs without having to convert button names to hex it is worth going to 500.
By the way,
don't tell anyone but I just spoke to Paul and he is planning on a minor change that will save the output in both old and new format until the external programs can be updated

Notice how I snuck this in to get Paul on the hook to do this?
Personally, it is all I use now.

And I am glad you asked since I was able to put in the shameless plug to get Paul to do the old and new format save and he did it and released it this morning.
