All,

I have read quite a bit of the posts on the forums. I am looking for some information and some validation of what I think I know.

I have a URC remote control and, for starters, want to program the single PWRON and PWROFF buttons with discrete IR codes (if they exist) for :
Samsung 7000 series plasma, FIOS CHS435 (Cisco I believe) and Onkyo HTRC320. I have more devices, but this is for starters.

As I understand I should:
- Buy the RCA learning remote (some say > $20)
- Find the discrete IR codes for ON/OFF
- Teach the URC

Is this accurate? Also - I still am not clear how I find the discrete IR codes on this site.

Thank you

Your understanding is a little murky, but you kind of get the idea.

In order to teach your remote what it wants you need to know the code.
I don't know anything about your cisco fios

but your TV is a pretty comon

If you get your hands on any UEI remote that handles EFCs you should be able to handle that one. Do you have a Cable remote, they are often UEI remotes.
Or an RCA RCR05B for less than $20 can do the trick.

The TV code needs to be
Discrete off Necx2 7.7 153
EFC = 00253
Discrete on Necx2 7.7 152
EFC = 00001

For the Onkyo you'll need a remote that handles 5 digit EFCs, and has Audio 1298 built in. The RCA has that, and so do cable Atlas remotes. They are the remotes that have a big bulge near the top and look like they swallowed something.

The Discrete On is PROBABLY Nec1 210.108 71
EFC would be 31960
and Discrete Off is Probably NEC1 210.109 4
EFC would be 32794

Anything else and you will probably need a cable.

Your reply is a bit murky, but my set top box is a Verizon CHS 435.
I think I get your explanation. I have to purchase the learning remote - so I will reply again when I have taken the next step.

Thank you for replying !!

So, I have purchased the remote.

What is the sequence for programming a button with an EFC?

The EFC code provided from the last post was "00001" for a discrete
ON on the Samsung Plasma 51" TV noted in the prior post.

Can somebody help on this?

Don

Don,
Did you setup the remote to work with the samsung 7000? That is the first step.

Once that TV mode is setup you can test the EFC

Select TV mode
point the remote at the tv
tap setup, 0 0 0 0 1

did the TV turn off?

If so you can keymove the EFC to a key

So I programmed the remote with device code 0812 for the Samsung
TV. That appears to be the right code as all the buttons work.

I then hit the TV device button, Hold Setup until it blinks twice and release,
then I enter 00001. The TV responds with "Not Available".

If I do a Table Lookup, I can't find the 00001 EFC code. Where do you
get this from?

What am I doing wrong?

Don

Vicky said TAP not HOLD. All you did was assign TV code 0000 (Sony). Change it back to 0812 and try again. Setup codes and EFCs are not the same thing. A setup code represents an entire device. An EFC is a single command. After you find a setup code in the tool, click EFC in the results to see the EFCs.

That's our only guess for discrete on. Was the TV on when you tried it? How about 00253, does that turn the TV off, if it is off to start with? How about 00183, that should do a power toggle. Press setup followed by the numbers as quickly as you can.

To use the lookup tool, do seach by setup code, TV, 0812 and pick your RCA remote. In the results, click EFC, and you'll see a big list. For 3 digit numbers, add 00 in front. So EFC 058 for example, becomes 00058 (which should be MUTE by the way). Try a few others and see if you can get anything to work.

The discrete on/off commands aren't in the lookup tool. They come from device upgrade files like this and can only be read using Remote Master:

Thank you for the clarification and detail.

I can now tap Setup and use the EFCs to power cycle the TV, open the TV menu, etc etc. That all seems to work fine.

As you implied, the discrete codes for ON/OFF don't work, so I will now
dive into Remote Master and the link you provided to see if I can find the
discrete ON/OFF EFCs for the Samsung Plasma. That's for tonight.

Thanks for the continuing support all!

Glad you're getting somewhere.

As far as discretes, unfortunately the ones posted already (00001 and 00253) are the same ones you'll find in the file linked. I don't know of any others. However, if they do exist, there is one sure way to find them. With codes like this, there are only 256 possibilities. So you can simply try all 256 (00000 through 00255) and see what happens. Once you get a good rhythm going, it takes about 15-20 minutes. There is a small risk you could run across some code that resets your TV or puts it in some kind of test mode, but I've never seen that on a Samsung, so you're probably pretty safe. If you go through all 256 codes and none are discrete on/off, then you can be certain that they don't exist.

When you get to the point of teaching, be aware that the command is sent when the final digit pressed and continues to be sent as long as that button is held.

If you do find anything new, please post the codes so we can add them to our library for the benefit of others.

I have a working Samsung (different model) and I think the problem may be that in my files ON is 00001 and OFF is 00253. If you were testing as described above then the ON or OFF would appear to not be working, because you only tested what you thought was OFF if the TV were on and vice versa. Try both commands one after another and see if either work.

Good catch ph7! Vicky's post is backwards, as are my subsequent instructions. Swapping codes should do the trick.

Benkeser, when you confirm they work, I'll fix the other posts and clean up the thread so nobody gets confused later.

EDIT: I fixed the other posts in the thread so all the codes are correct now.

No problem. My Samsung is 1,300 miles from me right now, so I couldn't test it to be sure, but I know what my RM file says.

PH7 ... Roger that ... Codes were reversed.

Can now power on and power off with discrete codes.

All is well.

Will continue this dialogue if I run into further stumbling blocks with my other devices.

Thank you!
