I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the Beginners Forum, but since its related to the extender, I'm putting it here.

My RS 15-2117 has 15 devices, 8 that go with buttons and 7 phantom ones. After installing the extender 2, I see that a number of the phantom devices are instead extender related. For example, Device #14 is listed as db-13/MISC/1107. I know that the LCD display thingie is 1107. Does this mean that I've given up the ability to put a 'real' device, ie a LD Player into this spot? In other words, are these devices the magic behind how the extender works? And if I decide I can live without changing the LCD display, can I delete the device/protocol that go with 1107 and then define Device 14 to be my LD player?

You're right, if you can live without any of the special protocols loaded w/ the extender you can delete them and replace them w/ whatever you want.

Those devices for the extender don't really need to be on a device so you should be able to change them

Oh boy, is this ever interesting. Trouble is, I have no idea what you mean by that. Change them to what? And how?

I sure feel I'm in the 'little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing' category right now.

What I assume you were saying is that the extender devices were on DB-whatevers. Well, they don't need to be there so you can use the DB-whatevers for any other device assignments.

Umm, I'm missing something major here. I didn't put them on the db-whatevers, they appeared there 'magically' when I ran the .exe that made the extender. I have no idea how to 'remove' them.

If I'm not mistaken, you're talking about "General" tab in IR. Here you usually assign setup codes to device buttons and to phantom devices that have no corresponding buttons. In either case you do not have to "remove" anything. Just put a new device type and setup code where you want it. The only thing that will change is on "Key Moves" tab you'll see "N/A" instead of lets say "db-13" you saw before.

Oh, that isn't bad, I could live with N/A there. I thought I had to do something special to remove them.

Just to make sure, I could put say a LD Player on device 14 and still use device 1107 to set the LCD display, but when I looked at the key mover tab the only difference I'd see from before putting the LD Player there is that the one column listing device would say N/A? What if I wanted to add in a new key move? Still just put in MISC/1107 just like before, the only thing is the display of the info that changes, do I have that right?

Correct. The only pitfall from not having the special protocols on a device is that you have to manually enter them when you create a keymove. A shortcut is to clone an existing keymove and then all uou have to do is add the hex commands
