Can device keys send a command

I have been albe to use the software to make just about any button do what I want, but I can't get the device keys (TV SAT DVD etc...) to send a command as well as swtich the modes of the remote.
I have the URC-8811. Can this be done. IR.Exe appears to let you do this, but can you really do it?

On a side note, my other challenge is getting macros to work on those buttons if that can be done.

The remote is programmed to not let you do this, but if you use an extender you can get around those restrictions.

OK, I heard of extenders, but nothing that I can find says what they are. What are they?

They are programs that you can load into your remote. They take over control of the remote and override all the built in restrictions. There is a folder for them over at Yahoo and there's a forum for questions on them here.

An extender essentially "extends" the functionality of the remote. Typically, they eliminate some of the restrictions of the default remote (like macros on device buttons). In addition, they usually offer other features not found in the default remote. Some of these include the ToadTog special protocol, faster macro execution, nested macros, etc.

The extender for the 8811 happens to be one of the most powerful, and popular, extenders available.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but which one is for the 8811? (looking at the file on Yahoo now)
Is it the one for the 8800? So basically 88xx?
