Help - my 7781 has crashed!

Just used IRv7 for the first time to upload to a new remote (URC 7781), and the remote has now crashed. The power button (& backlight for all keys) is blinking repeatedly.
I am unable to do a 'Magic 980' reset (pressing the magic key for 3 seconds has no effect). I have also tried removing the batteries for a minute or so.
IR (and the JP1.2 test program) do seem to be able to communicate with the remote (flashing stops whilst uploading/downloading). What I do not have is an original image to upload to it.
Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can reset/recover the remote?
