Hello all you helpful jp1 people.

VPT doesn't work for only two devices, CD and VCR. It is weird because it works for DVD (which is assigned to the same device code)

Here's the ir file:

Many thanks!

That's an easy one, VPT only works when the setup code programmed to a device button has the same type as the device button. For example, if you had programmed a VCR code to the VCR button, VPT would work, but as you've programmed a CBL code to it, it doesn't work.

We actually use this feature as a way to turn VPT off on older remotes that don't have individual VPT controls.

So, what you need to do is re-create your CBL/2000 upgrade as VCR/2000 and then create a new upgrade that replicates DVD/0571 to program to the CD button.

Or...

Use keymoves to fix the VPT.

Are you saying you can just go into remote master and arbitrarily change the device type (to match the intended device button), leaving all other things unchanged?

Thanks!

Yes, RM doesn't care what your device really is, so it won't mind if you create a CBL code for your DVD player, etc.

But, doesn't the device mode sometimes affect what keys are considered native and what are keymoves?

Yes the setup type is used to find the keymap. The keymap determines which keys are native, and what order RM needs to assemble them for the upgrade.

The setup type also effects various forms of punch through, and can effect the way the Record button works (one press or two).

And the setup type is used to find the correct setup code. There may be many 0000 codes in your remote, the setup type combined with the setup code is used to find the correct setup code.

The important thing here is that the setup type has no effect on what kind of equipment can receive the signal. The setup type is for internal use only.

When I was first starting out, I thought device type had some effect on what kind of equipment could see the signal Laughing Just one of the many misconceptions that I had about what was going on.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

Thanks guys, I just had this issue and searching found this thread and solved the problem.

Perhaps IR should check for this condition and warn you and/or lock out VPT for that device.

Just out of curiosity, what remote are you using?

OFA 10820N, using DVD type on CD or CBL buttons wouldn't work.

I also have 8820s (non Ns) but didn't try it on those.

It will if you change the device type on them. The procedure is in the manual. If you use a JP1 cable, it's not an issue.

Changing type manually might work, I didn't try it. JP1 using IR803 did not work, it created the issue causing me to look here for the solution.

Edit: I should make clear, the upgrade worked, VPT for that device would not.

OK, so the upgrade works, but not VPT. Scratch what I said then. Post your file so we can see what's going on.

Problem already solved: change the upgrade to type CD as described in the old posts up the thread. Smile
