Extract capability?

I have several RS-2116s running systems one of which has buttons starting to go out. I have re-assigned the buttons but now it is starting to eat batteries. So I figured it was time for new remotes.

I purchased a URC-10820 (and got the JP1.2/3 cable from Tommy.)

I lost my hard drive about six months ago and part of my back up was corrupted – the corrupted portion contained the KM files I created. Fortunately, I uploaded the hardest one to files section so I can recover that one.

These may be stupid questions; but, I have searched through posts and tool section.

1. Is there anyway to retarget the IR files I have to a different remote; i.e. from the 2116 file to one for a 10820 without the KM files? Suspect that since one is JP1 and the other is JP1.2 and the keys are different, the answer will be – no way.

2. Given that the above is not possible, is there any way to back up from the IR files I created to the KM files that I originally built using the IR file?

If I remember correctly, I had to get a lot of help here to create an upgrade for the DirecTV receiver (21-100) and a Sony HTIB. I know that the file section has DirecTV codes for RM and KM; but that is part what I ran into problems with before. I have already tried the codes preloaded in the remote with no success.

I was hoping to prevent having to rebuild everything or re-learn all of the keys from the DirecTV remote. But, if I have to…:)

There is no reason to learn any DirecTV keys. THIS upgrade has every possible command for every possible receiver address.

I guess you learned the hard way why we try really hard to get people to load their upgrade files into the file section.

However, all is not lost. Your first step should be to download and familiarize yourself with the RM program. It performs many of the same functions as KM but it does one important thing that KM doesn't do because it lets you convert an upgrade in your IR file back to a regular upgrade that can be re-configured for a different remote.

The answer Rob gave is the one you should go by, BUT if you insist on simply trying to re-create what you had, you can do so but not with KM. You have to use RM. You can take your device upgrades in the IR file you get from downloading your remote, and import them into RM. That will give you the upgrade, but without any of the information you may have had on extra functions not assigned to buttons, or keymoved functions.

Thanks for the answers.

Time to learn RM.

Thanks for the help. I am back in business.

I did run into a problem trying to install RM. I normally run JP1 activity on a laptop running Vista(32bit). When I installed RM, it would not run. I start it, it never comes up even though Task Manager shows that it is running. I didn't see any comments that RM was an issue on Vista.

Moved everything to my XP based desktop and it ran fine.

I'll work on the laptop and post a separate question if I can not resolve.

I use RM on a laptop with 64-bit Vista, just make sure that you install the correct java runtime environment.

Oh yeah, and once you've re-created the upgrade files, please upload them to the file section! :)

My laptop has JRE versin 6 update 17. I checked and it is the most current. Is there a different verion required for RM?

Have on my list to upload the DirecTV file. When I got into it I remembered that my original problem was that the receiver has a sticker on the back that ID'e it as a different type of receiver. Was easy to recreate once I remembered what it actually was.

Have you tried using the following utility to see if java was installed properly:

Rob,

It tested as being installed OK. Let me work on it for a while. I am sure it is either something unique to my laptop or I messed something up.

Thanks.

Rob, have it installed and running on my Vista laptop. While I am a raw rookie at JP1, I am fairly competent on PCs and their OS's. And, that was a bear to get running. Two questions:

1. If anybody has the Registry changes the RM install makes, I would really like to look at those. That appears to have been my original issue. I found some of the changes it made and the one causing my problem but it appears to make more changes than I found.

2. Tell me if it is worth uploading my DirecTV receiver upgrade file. I made it from the composit DirecTV file in files section. The only value I can think of is that there would be an entry for the specific model of HD receiver (HD 23-600). But, it seems like most folks would be better off with the file that covers all DirecTV receivers.

Congrats on finally getting it up and running. Someone else will have to answer your registry questions as I don't know the answer.

Regarding the DTV file, it's probably not worth loading if all you did was customize a file that you downloaded. But if you make any upgrades from scratch, you should load those.

I've never heard of an HD 23-600, but I have heard of an H23-600, if that's what you mean. It has exactly the same codes as all Hxx, HRxx, Rxx and Dxx receivers. I tried to make that clear in my file description, but I guess I need to add some more detail. I'll have to find a good list, so I get all the suffixes right.

You may also notice that the current D* upgrades have many signals that can't easily be learned from the original remote such as all the long key press transport codes (skip to tick, slo mo, etc.). So you'll get more functionality out of the existing upgrade anyway. I suspect any upgrades you tried in the past didn't work because you never loaded the required protocol. That protocol is built in to your new remote, so just about any D* upgrade will work if it's pointing to the right protocol ID.

As far as the RM issues go, you'll see all the reg entries if you edit setup.reg. There's not much to it. It just registers the file classes. I suspect any issues you are having are related to security under vista. Are you running the java version or the exe version? You may have more luck with the exe version if your java execution is being blocked due to some security setting.

EDIT: I've added every compatible DirecTV model I know of to my description HERE.

mdavej,

Sorry for the delay - work and honey-do's get in the way of real work.

My original problem was that the physical sticker on the back of the receiver says T23. I ended up calling the DirecTV help desk who gave me the actual model. I wrote down HD23-600; and I could have not heard them correctly or written down wrong. Your file works perfectly for my receiver - whatever the heck it is. :?:

I missed the registration file. You are correct that there is nothing there that should have caused what I saw. It had to be a self inflicted wound. What happened was that after I downloaded and ran setup, I had to stop and work. As part of that I made a lot of changes in my directories and was working with some custom apps. I ended up with one of the entries pointed to the original location which no longer existed. When I tried to start the java version, it was attempting to start but would never respond.

I have it running and my upgrades made. Am just playing with RM and reading documentation now to see what other magic I can do.

Thank you for the work you did on the DirecTV file.
