My Sony DVD player model CX985V is not able to read DVD's. It keeps trying but says "disc cannot read" and pops an error code of C 13 50. I opened it up and watched the DVD not spin up to normal speed, try for about 30 seconds each, then it gives up. Is this a salvageable thing or do I need to fork over full price for a new flippin' DVD player? Any insights are very much appreciated...

Probably time to pony up for a new machine. You'd need to have other machines to get salvage parts from to make a DIY repair feasible. The only fixable problem would be a bad spindle motor. (if you had a good one to swap in) If it spins at all then the motor is probably good.

The optics have likely failed.

As much as I like Sony products, their DVD players lack so many features, that repair doesn't make a lot of sense. Being a Movie Studio, they don't want to encourage pirating (in their view) so they won't play mpegs as files, AVI files, and often not even mp3s: which almost any $40 player will.
