You don't happen to have a link to that discussion, do you? I have a vague recollection of it now that you mention it. Looking at it again would help me recreate the problem and investigate what can be done about it.

In situations like this, especially when an expert is involved, I try to explain what RM is trying to do and how, and what caused the symptom described. This accomplishes 2 things - it clarifies it in my mind, and gives you an understanding of how RM works. Hopefully that leads to further discussions about how to enhance RM to handle the situation better. I don't know why that didn't happen in this case.

Ok, I did not get my message through, Sad . Next attempt:

Consider that you want to write a (Java-)program that generates/reads/manipulates jp1-objects (device updates, RDFs, IR images). Like generating device upgrades (or flashable images), e.g. from other sources (CCF files?), or extracting information (what buttons are available?), or generating documentation for a setup. (I have such stuff in the pipeline...) Most importantly, this is interesting for another, wider group than the number of people ready and willing to commit fixes to RM sources.

I understood all that. And in principle I don't disagree. But I guess my point was that until you asked, there have been exactly 0 requests for a Java JP1 API, and 0 offers to help create a Java JP1 API, and 0 offers to help finish RM.

Given my limited time, and the amount of work needed to make RM functionally complete (let alone mostly bug-free), I can't see spending the time to create an API. It certainly was never a design goal, and as you have discovered, a significant amount of redesign and refactoring would be required to do it. And I'm afraid it would also get in the way, at least in the short term, of making RM functionally complete.

I don't want to discourage you from undertaking such a project, if you feel you have the skills and desire to do it. I'll help by answering any questions that come up, but I won't be actively participating in the effort. I just don't have the bandwidth.

Thanks for saying "2" instead of "approximately one" which is closer to the truth.

John, your help in the early days was absolutely critical to what RM has become. You were very patient with me, and our collaboration on designing protocols.ini and especially the translator infrastucture was great.

I keep intending to get back to making RM enhancements, but it never seems to happen. Last time I tried to even get ready to do so, I discovered my old setup for accessing CVS at sourceforge no longer works. I didn't want to bother you for help fixing it until I become more confident I can actually contribute something.

Your help will be appreciated when you do find the time. I'm also happy to help you get your CVS setup working again, so that when you do have time to help you won't be slowed down by it.

I thought this was already working, but it isn't working. Accepted.

Could you add the ability to handle upgrade overflow as IR currently does? Very handy capability.

I have a request for a change, would it be possible for RM to keep track of whether you've actually made any changes and if you haven't, could it suppress the "do you want to save your changes" message.

I always get this message when I start RM for the first time and then try to open a file.

RM already tries to do that, but I'm sure it could be improved.

There's also a setting that controls some of how that works:

Options -> Prompt to Save

Choices are:
  • Always - prompt when performaning an action that might cause changes to get lost: New, Open, Exit
  • On Exit - Only check for changes on exit
  • Never
.

The default is Always.

Here are some wish list items:

- Save KM files in the recent list
- Default file open types to "All..."

Maybe just make the above options, if no one else cares.

I think the main one that can be annoying is the one where you've just started RM and you try to open an RM file, then it asks you if you want to save the non-existent changes. If you can suppress that message, regardless of which message option the user has selected, that would be great.

Feature SUGGESTION (not a firm request, but for consideration):

Currently in RMIR, only "Manual Settings" protocols are allowed to be edited. Perhaps as a user-selectable expert feature, one could allow editing of known protocols?

This would require RMIR to
(1) Allow opening the protocol edit window when double-clicking on an installed or upgrade (non-manual settings) protocol;
(2) Permit the user to make changes; and
(3) prompt the user about:
(a) saving the protocol;
(b) Whether to assign a new, unused PID or whether the user wants to "overwrite" or "re-use" the existing PID, and
(c) whether or not to assign the new PID (if applicable) to the Device Upgrade from which it was drawn.

Just a thought for next-level stuff.

For Greg,

I acknowledge that RM 2.00 preview 7 has seemingly implemented two feature requests of my authorship (Code Selector Feature, and File>New Capability) and you had marked those as "pending". I was supposed to hold off on marking them "Closed" until RM 2.00 was in final release, but SourceForge decided that 2 weeks was enough time in "Pending" status and closed them automatically. Can you re-do the auto-close-out feature to either go a longer time than 2 weeks, or alternatively not mark items pending until the release is final?

Hi

I may not be doing it right but if I open RM 2.02 beta by clicking the red shortcut sent to desktop, then select an upgrade which is in the list on the 'general' or 'devices' tab, then click 'edit', I can adjust the upgrade in the editor.

If the adjustment is e.g. to add or remove the button assignment I can click 'ok' and return to the image's list of devices.

In this case, and understandably because the path would not be right, the button assignment does not 'stick' unless the altered device configuration is saved before leaving the editing page.

When minor changes have been made it could be helpful to be asked if you want to 'save as' the upgrade.

Regards
Chris

RMIR is very nice, thanks for working on it!

Wish list suggestion:
RMIR currently supports Interface JP1.X Serial
Adding support for Interface type of JP1 Serial would be great.

Currently one has to switch back to IR to connect with old JP1 remotes via the serial port.

Thanks for considering,
Ziggy
