Trouble getting started - what am I doing wrong?

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Trouble getting started - what am I doing wrong?

Post by swechsler »

I have the parallel JP1 cable. I unzipped IR.exe and the RDF files from the Yahoo group. I connected the cable to my URC-414xxx remote. It seems to download (it picks up the signature and shows data on the raw data tab), but no other tabs show up, nor do any buttons show up on the main screen. I also tried with a General Instruments DRC-400 with the same result.

If it makes a difference, I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit), and I ran ir.exe in administrator mode.

Thanks,

Steve

The most obvious proble is that you are downloading ANYTHING FROM YAHOO. All that stuff is obsolete. Get all your IR and RDF files from this website.

Sorry, my mistake, I did download everything from here, but the FAQ still mentions the Yahoo site, which is what I was thinking of when I wrote the OP.

If you don't have IR set up right to point to the RDF's, then you will get that result.

When you first start IR, you have to tell it where the RDF's are. You can check this in the file-set-directory menu item.

So, you should have extracted the RDF's to somewhere on your PC, then tell IR where they are.

that should get you going.
this JP1 stuff is a sickness!

Let me know where it still says to download from Yahoo and I'll fix it.

NOTICE
As you can see, we're adding a file section to the JP1 forum, but not everything has been copied over from the Yahoo file section yet, so if you don't find what you're looking for, please check the Yahoo file section also.
This Notice in the file section led me astray when I came back to JP1 land. I had started with the YAHOO group and I couldn't find anything here, because I'm navigationally challenged. This site has absolutely wonderful organization, the Navigational issue is my problem. Because I couldn't find stuff, I went back to YAHOO and picked up obsolete stuff, and had Capn and Elizabeth pulling their hair trying to figure out how to deal with someone as obtuse as I was.

It says "if you don't find what you're looking for, please check the Yahoo file section also".

How could I better word that so it's clearer that I want you to look in this file section first, and then check the Yahoo file section only if you can't find what you're looking for.

I think at this point you can just say:

"Though most information in the Yahoo files section is now obsolete, if you cannot find a device upgrade in the forums file section you may want to look there."

Also, perhaps you should just delete all the tools/RDFs etc from the Yahoo site...

"As you can see we are adding a file section" is what led me off course. It sounded like this was just started, so when I couldn't find it, I didn't look as hard as I should. Again I had been out of JP1 land for years when I read that AND MY navigational skills suck.

That's a good idea. I just deleted them and I also deleted the Notice from the current file section. I doubt that there's anything useful in the old Yahoo file section that isn't already over here.
