RemoteMaster confusion regarding .rmdu files

It was obvious to me how to successfully upload .rmir files to a remote.
Unfortunately I do not see how to do the same with .rmdu files.
Perhaps .rmdu must first be converted to .rmir before the remote can be programmed?
Please forgive me if my question is beyond idiotic. I'm a total noob to this software.

An RMIR file reflects the total picture of what your remote looks like, whereas an RMDU file is an upgrade for a single device.
When you're in the RMIR program and you have your remote's profile loaded, the Devices tab lists all of the upgrades (if any) that are in your remote. When you edit one, the RM program pops up. To add a new upgrade, click on the New button (in the Devices tab), then click on the Open button in the pop-up RM screen, then select an RMDU file.

Thanks for your clear and concise answer. It makes perfect sense now.
Another function I'm still uncertain how to do: Manually assigning pronto hex codes to individual buttons. I assume this is supported within the aforementioned RMDU utility of RM? I've never attempted to do this, perhaps it's a relatively straightforward process...

Which model of JP1 remote do you have, and does it support learning? If so, in RMIR, go to the Learned Signals tab, click New, set the Bound Key to the button that you want to program, make sure that the Data Format is set to Pronto, and then paste the Pronto Hex in the box below, then click OK.
In the JP1 world, we mainly use learning to decode signals because there are better ways to program buttons.

OK Rob, I'll post my follow-up within the linked thread.
