I got my NS-RMTSNY17 remote today so I've been able to complete the testing. I can confirm the following:
  • It does not support keymoves
  • It does not support macros
  • The only 9xx commands it supports are 980, 975 and 976
  • It does support upgrades. I loaded an upgrade for my TV and it worked.
I could not figure out what it's doing when you use the POWER search or a button search, because nothing changes in the download.

So, bottom line, this is a fine remote for a single device. If you want the volume buttons to work something else, like your stereo, you would have to learn those buttons. It's a good, cheap learning remote, so it would be useful for capturing new devices. The main thing I don't like about it are the 4 arrow buttons, as they are just a single ring stuck between the OK button in the middle 5 other buttons surrounding it, which makes it kind of hard to press.

@SleepyBum, what are your goals with this remote? From my point of view, my testing is complete and the RDF is complete.

I just got one and will be playing with it over the weekend, but I doubt I'll have much to add. No macros or keymoves is disappointing.

As it's only a 1 device remote, the lack of keymoves is not that big of a deal, and you can use learning instead if you want to mix in buttons from a different device. Macros would have been nice though.

Finally got my remote working, and accepting upgrades. I think it got into some weird, buggy state because of the POWER/button search and 980 code resets. I had a few buttons not working at all, not even lighting the power button when pressed.

Fixed it by uploading the original .ir file and then the upgrade. Modified discrete HDMI 1-4 to the buttons right above the number pad. Digital/Analog, EXIT, Guide and i-Manual doesn't seem to have any functions on my TV, EXIT does work.

Manually learnt, Logitech Vol+/- and mute. Need CR2025 batteries for the A/C remote. Want to re-learn/verify the A/C codes again. The learnt signals for the Logitech speakers shows up fine and verifies with the existing upgrades.

Discrete HDMI input -> functions upgrade
A/C functions -> DVR buttons learning
Logitech speakers -> volume/mute buttons learning

Thanks The Robman for finishing the RDF. I think the remote working to mostly where I wanted. Slightly disappointed that macros don't work. To power on/off everything.

Main question... Is there a way to save/input/upload learnt codes using RMIR. It would be nice to program learnt codes and upload it, instead of manually learning.

This was the cheapest learning remote I could find, I had a hunch it was JP1 capable. At worst, I would just manually learn everything needed. I'm happy I can now pull/verify codes from other remotes. MrMoody mentioned the Onn 6-device remote also has learning, so I'll pick one of those up as backup.

This remote is almost identical to my original Sony TV remote. Now with the upgrades and learning, I have it functioning pretty much as I want controlling the TV, A/C, and speakers.

Original Sony TV remote on the left, Insignia Sony remote, RM-VL600, Charter OCAP 1060BC3.

Loved the RM-VL600 learning remote, 8 devices. Big Volume/Channel buttons. Clean/simple layout. Used it for 15+ years, but the buttons are dying. Opened it up a few times to clean it, but it's not working anymore. Manually learning/programming it is a pain.

Yeah the directional key pad is way too small and too close to the circular buttons. I also mistakenly hit the outer ring buttons sometimes. Also, the buttons seems a smaller than the original Sony remote.

Big thanks to everyone commenting and helping out!

Absolutely. Open your original "programmed" ir file, go to the Learned tab, click on a learned signal and click EDIT, there you'll see the button in Pronto Hex format. Copy/paste this and save it, then open your new rmir file, the one with your new upgrade in it, and back on the Learned tab, click on NEW and paste it in.

Okay, I've tried this. I can add learned codes to RMIR. For some reason, the remote is not taking the programming.

The remote seems to be completely reseting itself. Doing a remote download afterwards, all the Learned Signals and Devices are completely empty. The regular modified upgrades disappeared.

Wondering if there's some incompatibility/bug between RMIR and this remote. Deleting all Learned Signals from the .rmir file and uploading makes the remote work again with the upgrades.

So you're trying to combine some learns from the A/C with one upgrade, right? Which upgrade are you trying to use and which buttons do you want the A/C functions on, I may try to do it for you over the weekend.

And can I see the rmir file that you are loading and is being rejected?

I took the original setup code 0810 and made a few mod, renamed to SetupCode 2000.

HDMI 1 - 4 is set to the Digital/Analog, EXIT, Guide and i-Manual row of buttons.

Function.48.name=Digital/Analog
Function.48.hex=12 80
Function.22.name=Exit
Function.22.hex=92 80
Function.23.name=Guide
Function.23.hex=3B 58
Function.30.name=Manual
Function.30.hex=BB 58

CC set to enter

Function.29.name=CC
Function.29.hex=D0 80

This worked fine by itself with no learning. Manually learned using remote programming code 975 afterwards ago works fine.

Tried adding A/C to the DVR buttons using RMIR new signal:
This was learned from another remote.

Temp+ ---> Function.35.name=FFWD

Uploading anything RMIR input learned seems to cause the remote to reset itself.

Even if I deleted all the learning and added the originally Logitech learned code I pulled to respective buttons:

I found the problem. You need to open the RDF using Notepad (or similar) and update the checksum entry, it needs /2 on the end.

[Checksums]
*$0000:$0002..$0FFF/2

Anyone know what a segment type $1B is? That's what changes. The above are what is currently showing in mine. There are two copies of this segment. The first copy doesn't change and contains the original values. The second copy has changed after the Power scan blinking a couple of times.

My totally wild guess on the coding:
Third byte: Complement of ordinal number in the upgrade list, i.e. number of blinks of Power. Original is 1, altered is 2.
Four pairs following: Pointers to ROM location of upgrade information?

Type $1B is a new type to us, which is not surprising as it appears to be related to a situation we haven't seen before, either. Segments with flag byte $DF are a default, those with $FF are the active ones. Curious that the address pairs 60 E7 (default) and 61 69 (current) appear three times. It needs more testing to see if your "wild guess" holds up to further scrutiny.

Edit: additional guess does not seem correct.

I have posted development build RMIR v2.14.11 in the RMIR Development folder on SourceForge. This provides support for the type $1B segment and has passed such tests as I can do without having a remote for testing. The most likely area for problems to arise is in a download, as that is something that I clearly have not been able to test at all. The build includes Rob's RDF, map and image for this remote so there is no need to add those separately.

I would welcome any comments and/or bug reports on the support for this remote in this build.
