I haven't done anything with JP1 for a while because I haven't changed hardware in a while. Yesterday, I bought a new TCL Roku TV, so I need to do a bit of remote reprogramming. (first I have to find my JP1 cable!)

Through my cable provider, I have these remotes: http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=100393&view=next&sid=1d4c4a78f08b994adbddaf0215c19a10

My question to the group is how would you suggest I configure that remote to best work with the TV functions, Roku, soundbar and cable box? I'm trying to figure out the best organization of buttons and/or devices to make it easy for my wife to use.

NOTE: This is not so much about the technicalities of programming the remote, but more about the "design" of the result.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Craig

I'm guessing the following upgrade will work for you:

I took a look at all the functions included and it appears that, apart from all the discrete codes for the various inputs and channels, the functions are all fairly normal, which just leaves all the inputs/channels. One thing to keep in mind is that you can navigate to all the inputs and channels through the menu, so you don't HAVE to program them all to buttons on the remote.

First, regarding the physical inputs, like HDMI1, etc. My preference has always been to program these as key moves in the device mode that uses them. So first, pick a button that you think you can do without in all modes, like maybe the LIVE button. Then, let's assume that your DVD player is hooked up to HDMI1, you would keymove the HMDI1 function to the LIVE button in DVD mode. Then repeat this process for the device hooked up to HMDI2, etc.

For the various channels, which ones do you use? Pick the 10 that you use the most and program them to the number buttons, then re-arrange the channel map in Roku itself so that the first 9 or 12 channels match the layout that you did on the remote's number buttons (with # and *). That way, the menu screen is a reminder of where you programmed the buttons so in time you will remember that HBO is on 6, etc.
