Do you have any detailed photos which show the type of metal dome switches that are used in this remote control?

I'll peel off the white and post pics in the next few days. But the whole thing is pretty smooth, as if it's one big sheet with domes pressed out of it, and the domes are a brass color.

I peeled the white membrane off and discovered that it's what's holding the domes on the board. Remove the membrane, and the domes come off and will never go back. There's a little hole in the membrane at the top of each button, I assume to let air pass in and out when it's pressed and released.

That's what I suspected was the purpose of the white sticky stuff. Were you able to compare the dome on a working vs. non-working button to see what was the problem?

No. I didn't keep track of which buttons had failed before disassembly. But my guess is the dome or membrane is probably deformed just enough that it takes more pressure to make good contact on both the outer and inner circles. I don't really see any possibility of corrosion being the culprit, just mechanical failure.
