JP1 Remotes

I have: Mythtv V30 in home build box, USB IR receiver, URC-7130 essence R02, Logitech K120 wired keyboard in use, RM, RMIR, RMPB, Bookmarked web site https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Programming ... _Keyboards , JP1 Adapter and JP1.2/1.3 (FLASH) USB Cable for Universal Remotes cable on order. All of which has me confused!
What I want to achieve is using the URC-7130 as a keyboard(any keyboard, UK preferred, will do) to control the MythTV. I can set it up so that any key presses will be interpreted by MythTV correctly( as is the current keyboard). So the question is how do I program the URC-7130 so that it is interpreted as a keyboard? Simple steps will help.

Thanks Rob. Unfortunately your first ref uses LIRC which I am trying to avoid. I have read the 2nd ref before and it is also bookmarked!
Using my current keyboard (a USB) I have found the scan codes for the different keys. How do I get the remote to output these scan codes?(if I can).
The parts have been ordered from diygadget.com.(from your side of the pond) and are: JP1.2/1.3 to JP1 Adapter and JP1.2/1.3 (FLASH) USB Cable for Universal Remotes. I had to guess that these would be correct.

I'm not sure where LIRC comes into play, but it might help if I explain that most of the folks here don't know anything about MythTV, so if your LIRC reference is regarding how you set things up on the MythTV box itself, I can't help you there, but if you need help setting up your URC remote control, that we can help with.

What exactly do you mean by the "scan codes"? To set up your remote control, we would need to know what IR Protocol to send and what values of the parameters of that protocol are needed for each signal. These parameters have names such as Device, Subdevice and OBC. I think your remote has learning capabilities, so if you have an IR keyboard that sends the signals you need and you can learn them to your remote, RMIR should be able to decode these to tell you the protocol and its parameters.

Thanks Graham. Let me deal with your points.
1. Scan Codes are what the keyboard sends to the PC and is interpreted by the PC as a key. e.g. Shift=56, a=57, 56 followed by 57=A.
2. Protocol, device, subdevice, OBC are what I need to know (I think).
3. The URC-713x series are not learning remotes but can be programmed as different specialised remotes.
4. I do not have a IR keyboard, it is wired USB.

Thanks for your answers. As you don't have an IR keyboard, I take it that it is your USB IR receiver that will interpret the IR signals and convert them to scan codes. In that case we would need details about what the IR receiver expects to receive. Or am I totally misunderstanding what you are trying to do? That is quite likely, as I have no idea what a Myth TV is. Some time ago I did help a user to program his remote to act as a keyboard, but that was an IR keyboard and the USB IR receiver came with the keyboard to convert the IR signals to scan codes. Yours seems to be a stand-alone USB IR receiver and may work very differently.

We need to know exactly what USB IR receiver you have and how you intend to send full qwerty with the limited number of buttons on your remote (multi-tap like a phone num pad?).

If you load the upgrade below and use either an MCE or FLIRC USB IR receiver, you get full qwerty with modifiers and mouse control.

Having said that, it's going to be much, much easier to use a wireless keyboard like the Logitech K400 which runs about $20 here in the US, or use a mobile phone app like Hippo Remote or Mobile Mouse. The apps use wifi instead of IR, and the onscreen keyboard and integrated touchpad type mouse are very easy to set up and use.

I used an IR remote like yours for qwerty and mouse control with a PC in the past, and it was as if the shackles had been removed when I switched to my phone and or Logitech keyboard with integrated touchpad. I still used my IR remote for DVR control. But it was no problem whipping out my phone when I wanted to to a qwerty search.

The USB receiver is an Inteset IReTV(supposedly MCE compatible).
I do not intend to use the full QWERTY set. MythTV has limited commands and a URC 7130 has more than enough buttons.
Thanks for the reference, I will investigate tomorrow(it's now 2140 in the UK!). My wife is disabled(cannot use her hands but can move her head) and so IR is the only way to work the TV/MythTV.(curtains, lights, HiFi, carer alert and much more!).

Perfect. I have an IReTV as well that I use on a Fire Stick. I didn't realize it would work on a computer. It should recognize the commands in the upgrade file I linked. Just open that file and change the remote to your model in the drop down.
