JP1 Remotes

The Toshiba DVR codes in the files are for VCR+ DVRs, and there are three other codes to manage TVGOS in the other models.

If someone with a Toshiba TVGOS DVR can confirm the EFC for TV Guide and post the EFCs for the other two it would be much appreciated:

I would recommend trying the gap OBC codes.

You're right, that is the upgrade. The XS35 does not respond to some of those codes e.g. Record Menu, Record Mode because everything is routed through TVGOS.

That is my last resort because while doing the OBC-fill routine on a Toshiba TV I wound up in Service Mode. I had assumed that service functions were on a different device or sub-device to prevent blockheads like me from getting into trouble, but apparently not on at least one Toshiba device.

It took three days of fooling around to get the TV back to the real world and it may be imagination, but I've felt the color balance has been off ever since....

I'll give it a few days, better safe than sorry.

Trying random codes is more risky with a TV, but with most other devices you're fairly safe.

What is a TVGOS anyway?

TV Guide On Screen is apparently a feature that is of growing popularity on DVRs (ostensibly to compete with Tivo.)

TVGOS (TV Guide On Screen) turned up either with or not long after the onboard HDD. It is one of those Love/Hate features.

All the major players came out with TVGOS on their high end models, but implementations varied between on-PCB and on-HDD (which equated to high failure rates on those Pioneer models). Most let you turn off TVGOS, but Toshiba eventually integrated TVGOS so tightly into the control structure that you cannot access 'normal' capabilities like setting a date/time recording by button, you have to go through a TVGOS multi-nest menu.

DVD/HDD recorders of all types started to disappear in 2006 and only Funai still sells them (under Philips and Magnavox labels).

Unfortunately, I have yet to see any TVGOS recorders that work with digital TV. So this feature on old analog tuners will likely cease to function in February, since no DTV converter boxes will convert the new digital TVGOS data back to analog.

Interesting link, TV Guide schedules are going to remain after February. In fact, life may even get better for the owners who encounter problems with incomplete/failed listings today. When the listings fail the the only resort is to set recording times manually.

TVGOS is clumsy enough, but manual time recording is miserable. It takes 9 steps to achieve what can be done with a single button on the early TVGOS or non-TVGOS Toshibas. That can be overcome, but the menu manipulations below and the setting of date/time etc are done on less than 1/6 of the viewable screen. The other 5/6 remain occupied with the TV listings and PIP of the current channel.
