Irscrutinizer working on 2 computers with linux 16.0.4
FYI Problem with xubuntu 18.0.4
I think lirc is the culprit but not sure
18.0.4 locks up right at login screen can not do anything
I use system back which makes a restore point much like windows does
But since it will not start i boot my chaletOS and manually copy files from restore point
back onto the system
With other problems i have had with 18.0.4 I will wait awhile b4 deciding
how I want to upgrade my system

Sorry, I am not in the position to help you with your system(s). But at least it is not an IrScrutinizer problem.

Let me just clarify a few general issues:

/dev/lirc does not belong to "Lirc" (any longer). It belongs to, and is maintained with the Linux kernel. Lirc is (now) entirely a user-space project. It is not required to use /dev/lirc*. Thus, "Linux" always comes with /dev/lirc support; while you have to install Lirc separately.
Actually, it is quite possible that running the Lirc server (lircd) interferes with other programs (like IrScrutinizer) that wants to access /dev/lirc. So don't run lircd while using IrScrutinizer.

I now understand /dev/lirc not belonging to Lirc and i will work on 18.0.4 as time permits. Thank you for all your help
I was in the process of setting up 18.0.4 when i got side tracked into setting up Irscrutinizer So we will see how things go with 18.0.4 in the future
Once again thank you for your help I will keep plucking away at 18.0.4
But now locally I have 2 new OTA stations So back to RMIR to add some Macros to 5 tv remotes

Trying it again
So what I get is that I start capturing hw it appears to work and press test
result in java exception hardware not ready (not open)
Running java 11 if that makes any difference

This means, surprise, that you did not open the hardware (Sending hw pane. Note that you should get something sensible in "Detected properties".)

No thats not it even in the working linux the sending part does not work but
only the capturing part works but in18.0.4 the capturing hw appears to start but throws error after hitting test or pressing capture in the scrutinize window

The box does not come with IR emitters. Intead you have to connect one or two such using the 3.5mm plugs in the back. (The right one is transmitter 1, the left one transmitter 2, ironically.) For example, this emitter.

Can you tell me how to reproduce?

I just tried with Java 11 (openjdk), no problems.

Can you download, compile and run the testsuite at Github?

Sorry i am not smart enough to compile stuff
I am aware that it needs ir emitters plugged into it but i assumed it would still activate
Now here is the weird thing i just hit open in the sending tab and it is working
it now says in the detected box mode 2 setcarr.sendrec. settm #xmtrs=0
it never did that b4 everything was always greyed out this is on my linux 16
I have to find my ir emitters but will still have issue with xubuntu 18
I still do not understand how the transmit is now working.

Ok now have ir emitters plugged in and yes it is sending ir to my tv

I found some work arounds for problems i have had
When using xubuntu 16.0.4 open sending hw gave intermittent error
If i send ir with a remote while hitting open it will open
Issue on both xubuntu 16.0.4 and 18.0.4 but mainly 18.0.4
Was that opening sending hw was not working errors all the time
solution for me was to check the other tabs that have a serial port in their settings
I always found them set to /dev/ttyusbo the port my external modem uses
I turned off modem and hit refresh and the line goes blank
Then the sending hw /dev/lirco will open
So I have a hardware issue on this computer that may or may not be the same on other computers
Oh it has been a learning curve and I will always be learning
Thank You
