No you aren't mistaken.

Some of the later remotes won't do any shifted keys while in an activity, is that what's happening? Will any shifted normal key work in device mode? I haven't gotten around to trying anything on mine yet. I need to do that.

Certain shifted keys work in normal device as well as in activity Mode
arrow keys can be shifted and as expected digit keys shifted are for sending EFC'S

I have now posted development build RMIR v2.14.4 in the RMIR Development folder on SourceForge. This includes the latest RDF for the URC-3660 that has the support for Controlled Macros removed. I believe this to be the final version of the RDF, so please let me know if it still has any problems.

Testing RDF on RMIR v2.14.4 and have not run into any problems with Macros, Timed Macros, or DSM Everything seems good to go

Those buttons are a mystery. They are hex button codes that are included in the Button Map, which is a list of the button codes that can have functions assigned in built-in setup codes. However, they are outside the range 01-40 used by the physical buttons on the remote. This makes them different from the additional two devices. It seems possible that there is an 8-device version of the remote that uses the same firmware and has names and physical device buttons for Dev4 and Dev8 but unlikely that there could be physical buttons corresponding to codes 71 and 72 even on such an extended remote.

If you want to explore them further and you use built-in setup codes for your equipment, you could create a macro or key move that includes these buttons and see if they send signals for your devices and if so, whether those signals have any noticeable effect. Just because a built-in setup code can assign signals to these buttons doesn't mean that they all do so, so they might not send signals for your equipment but it might be something you might like to try. Other than that, I have no idea of their purpose and they will remain a mystery.

Regarding the mystery buttons, I found the 8 device version of this remote. So 71 and 72 are likely those device buttons, AUX and SOUND. Maybe name them phantomAUX and phantomSOUND?

I experimented as per Graham;s suggestion and can confirm that some of them will send out signals.
Using built in codes for my devices I used key-move's for buttons 71 and 72
While some devices sent out a signal others did not,
On one set up code the signal it sent did not affect the device but using irscrutinizer it
displayed correct Device and Sub-Device for the device and the OBC was in a Gap of OBC's not used for the device.
Basically it appears buttons 71 and 72 are function buttons that are not physically present on the 6 or 8 device remote's

FF and REW seem to have LKP functions. ?? Not surprising since there is no Skip key.

So maybe 71 and 72 are the LKPs like in the OARUSB04G where the FF button has two addresses, one for long (FF) and another for short (Skip Fwd). Same goes for the REW button - long (REW) and short (Skip Back).

That's what I was hoping. I will try to test this today.

Preliminary test on DVD Built in code 0675 button 71 gave me a skip FWD and 72 did SkipBCK.
Did not work on my upgrade only worked with built in code but needs more testing to be sure. I may very well not have things set up right in the upgrade.

Confirmed with factory built in upgrade DVD-4016, learned with Nevo. LKPs learned on Replay and Skip.

Edit to add: The SKPs should be Skip and the LKPs should be REW/FF, just like the OARUSB04G, because the SKPs don't have repeats. So in the RDF:

button72 -> Rew
button71 -> FF
Rewind -> SkipBack (Skip-)
FastFwd -> SkipFwd (Skip+)

I actually did mine like this, because I think it makes more sense while looking at it, and it should handle conversions from other remotes a little better:

Macros on device buttons don't appear to work. Om most remotes without an extender I use a device key macros to select inputs.
Macros on shifted device buttons don't appear to work.
DSM (device specific macro) on shift power works. Requires pressing three buttons.
DSM on unshifted app1 and app3 work. Distance between device and app buttons makes one hand operation difficult.

Other observations:
Good size buttons and button spacing - easy to use setup/shift.
Has enough buttons to mostly avoid using shift.

No dedicated skip+ and skip-. I am using list and live for skip.
Use aa batteries - battery life should be good
