All you need to do is assign some other function to the POWER button (such as PLAY, DISPLAY, etc) so that when you test the "power" button during setup you can see if it worked.

Of course, if the unit doesn't have a power button, you will have no way of turning it on via the Slingbox, so you'll have to leave the unit turned on all the time.

Ingenious idea.

Actually, the OSD is always on. There is no power on/off function.


Also, I work with a company that makes Ir receivers. It will output
any of 6 protocols in ASCII or HEX formats. The ASCII output represents
the hex values.
The unit connects via RS232 or USB.
Six protocols are NEC, RC5, Sony, Mitsubishi, Matsushita, Toshiba, Sharp.

Custom firmware can be developed and flashed to it.
