Yes you can change it thru IR. Just using the remote you would use the 992 "Mode Map" command to change the device mode. the instructions are on page 33 of the manual that you linked to.

Yes, it's apparent to me now, of what that section is doing. Though, the directions seemed to say that for a DVD, you just press the
AUX button, then hold the
Setup until the LED blinks twice, and then enter the four digit code,
0533 in my case. There was nothing about needing to
Reassign a component key for it to work. As far as I know, I didn't go about changing the
AUX device mode on the remote and I tried the
0533 code, with my remote in its initial state right out of the box, to use my Sony DVD player, and it didn't work.
Still, I think I have a little problem. When I go to
IR and download the info from my remote, it says that my
AUX is of Type VCR. More importantly, it only gives me the following choices for Type; CBL/SAT, TV, VCR, AUDIO and OEM. There's no DVD. So what should I do? I'm a bit confused here.
Thanks so much for your help

Most remote models have a reduced set of device types, so in IR.EXE you can only select from your model's types.
Each type that is missing maps onto some type that isn't missing. But that mapping also varys a little by model.
The thing to do in this situation is look inside IR's devices tab to find the upgrade you installed.
If I understand you correctly, you installed a DVD type upgrade. In IR's devices tab you should be able to find the upgrade you installed and IR will show what type it mapped to.
I expect DVD mapped to VCR (so your AUX button was already correct as you described it). But I'm not certain DVD mapped to VCR.

I removed the Sony DVP-S7000 upgrade I had tried earlier, so it should be back to the standard setup. So, it has
AUX1 VCR 0533 as its settings and should work, but it doesn't. I hope to find something that works soon.

I quickly glanced thru your earlier posts but I can't tell whether you still have the original Sony remote, nor whether you have a JP1 learning remote. As this has basically become a "code search" post, maybe you should edit the first post in the thread to start with the code search template.
Anyway, if you do still have the Sony remote and you have a JP1 learning remote, please learn some signals from the Sony remote and tell us what the device codes are.
Do you know if this DVD player supports different unit codes (or "modes")? According to the following site there are 4 possible codes:
1) 26.73 (standard)
2) 26.34 (mode 2)
3) 26.250 (mode 3)
4) 26.18 (portable)
Apparently the DVD recorders come with the mode3 codes as the default.

For perhpas easier access and recognition, here's the same
Code Search template post info:
Device: Sony DVP-S9000ES
Type of device: DVD player
JP1 Remote model: Outlaw Audio (Catalyst 48)
JP1 user? Yes
Still have original remote? Yes
Checked the file section? Hmmm. Tricky decision here. Apparently the already existing code,
0533, should work for it, otherwise I have tried loading the
Sony DVP-S7000 upgrade. It wouldn't
Load into
KM so I had to
Import the file, as it was for an older version of
KM, and I have uploaded my update
here.
Checked the Pronto file section (at R/C)? Yes. I got this
Sony DVP-S9000ES file.
Partially working setup code? No.
Learning remote question? Yes and No. Check the
Outlaw Audio Comment here.

The Outlaw remote is not a learning remote, but if you solder in a few parts it can become one, that's what that comment was referring to. Here are the
instructions in case you're interested.
What about my "unit code" question? Do you know if your unit supports different unit codes? If it does, try setting the unit code back to 1. If you know nothing about unit codes, try changing the sub-device code in the upgrade that you loaded from 73 to 34, 250 or 18 and then re-test the upgrade.

Robman, I don't know anything about a unit code. How would I find out?
I guess my biggest concern is that the code 0533 should work for my remote with my Sony DVP-S9000ES. Why isn't it? The other Outlaw Audio owner said his remote worked fine with code 0533. So therefore, mine should, shouldn't it? And do you know what Device Type it needs to be?
Thanks so much for your help so far. You have done a lot, and I thnk we are about to get this solved.

I keep trying to explain that if the DVD/0533 code doesn't work, unless you're doing something wrong, it's possibly because you're unit is set to a different unit code. Seeing as how you don't know how to set it back to unit code 1, which would make it respond to the DVD/0533 code, I am suggesting that you change the sub-device code in the upgrade you are using to the codes I listed earlier, then re-test the upgrade.

Hmmm. The one little problem is that my remote doesn't have a Device Type of DVD. It only has CBL/SAT, TV, VCR, AUDIO and OEM. What one do I need to select?

There's nothing in the Owner's or Service manual that indicates that there are any unit codes possible with the 9000. I've worked on a couple of these and they always worked with the standard Sony remotes (and DVD 0533 with my universals) My RCA RCU810, of course has an ofset of 17 using 0550. I don't know anything about the Outlaw so I can't offer much constructive help on making a DVD upgrade work on it.

Thanks Robman. I haven't got it to work yet, but I haven't tried that much. One little question, should you take the batteries out of your remote when upgrading it? If not, it would save me a little bit of time in this procedure.
Oh, by the way, thanks for asking about the mode for my DVD player. It made me go through the menus on it. I found nothing for setting the mode, but I did find that I had my Dolby Digital set to D-PCM and not Dolby Digital. I was wondering why, when I ran the
Video Essentials DVD for the 5.1 surround channels, it only played both and not the seperate left and right surrond channels. It now does play them properly, since I set my DVD player to use Dolby Digital and not D-PCM. I'll be able to enjoy my DVD's that much more.
Thanks

If you've already tried the standard DVD/0533 codeset and found that that doesn't work, and you've tried creating upgrades using the 4 alternative device codes that I posted and those don't work, you've pretty much exhausted all the options that we can offer remotely (no pun intended).
Therefore, you are pretty much left with 3 options as I see it...
1) Give the
hardware mod a try and convert your Outlaw remote into a learning remote so you can capture the signals from the Sony remote.
2) Buy a cheap JP1 learning remote, like the URC-8811, and capture the signals that way.
3) Send your Sony remote to one of us so that we can capture the signals.

I haven't tried all of them yet. I was just wondering if you can upload with the batteries still in the remote. Can you?
Thanks
