here is what I have so far. I ended up resetting my remote to factory settings. At first the remote wouldn't even work on the cable box which was just weird but I figured that out and programmed my tv so it is back to like it was. I also put the volume lock on AUX now and I tried to program 1658 to the AUX function but it gave me a long blink (invalid code sign). Is there another step to this that I am missing? I did the basic AUX, hold set up for 2 blinks, 1658 steps and like I said I just got a long blink and it did not power off the HT System. Now, I was having a similar issue with the cable box after I reset it but I did the "programming ID Lock" i think is what its called and then just put the same code in for the cable box that I had saved on my 8910 and now that works fine like before. Should I do the programming ID lock thing on the AUX key? Will that mess anything up?

Let's try to blink back the remote's signature. Using the 983 command instructions, find the signature. We'be been assuming that the Cox remote is the 7820B, which has signature 3046.

Secondly, for many cable remotes, the device lock only matters to the CBL button. Maybe yours is different, but why not try a few other AUX setup codes, and see if those are accepted. Try Audio 1758. That also may control power and volume.

Edited to fix typo.

did you mean 983? 983 is blink back and I will try it for the AUX function

edit: I got 1043 on the blink back for the AUX button. Not sure what that means, and 1758 also gave me a long blink.

That is not a blink back of any code assigned to any device. That is a blinkback of the firmware "signature" of the actual remote. 1043 is actually signature 10431043 which means that yours in an OLDER Cox remote than had been presumed by some folks giving you guidance here. It is a JP1.2 remote using the HCS08 Freescale processor. That is neither better nor worse than what was assumed, but it is useful to know. Now you can be provided more tailored suggestions.

I was on the UEI Cox support site and the other 7820 has these sony codes

Audio
Sony 0033, 0035, 0032, 1058, 1441, 1258, 1759

TV
Sony 0000, 1100

vcr
Sony 0000, 0035, 0032

DVD
Sony 0533, 1033, 1533

I dont' believe any of these are capable of doing Sony 20, 16 codes, but I think you will probably get the volume and power working with one of these,
Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

good to know... I could always exchange this remote for a newer one from cox for free if I need too. I have done it before at my apartment with no questions asked.

I know 0000 is the TV code and I tried a few of the others in AUX mode but only got long blinks with them.

is there a chat area or something on these forums? I think we can proabbly get this done pretty quick if we talk in real time

I would change it out because the 7820 (as opposed to the 7820B) doesn't have either 26.73 or 16.16, so most of the HTIB functions can't be programmed in unless you get a JP1.2/3 cable.

Just so you know, earlier in the thread you posted a link to a manual. That link is to the newer remote 7820B rather than the one you actually have (7820), so possibly some of the instructions for things like VPT, etc. may be incorrect.

The remote you have is the "Cox Digital 7820" rather than the Cox DVR 7820".

The phpbb forum software doesn't have a "chat" feature, but you could offer to chat with people via your gmail if needed.

thats a good idea about gmail chat. if anyone of you guys is willing to chat on gmail for about 10 mins or so then let me know.. sleeps1 (at) gmail.com

Anyway, I just got back and now have a new cox remote. The signature code for this one is 3046. Does this help anything? lol

Edit: I put in the code you told me to put in earlier and I now have control of the power and volume functions of the HT System! This is great!! Now I guess I just need to set up the rest of the buttons so I can play DVDs and stuff from that remote also? That seems a little more complicated though so a chat session on gmail would still be great

I am testing everything out and right now I can control power, volume, and FF/RW on the cox remote for the HT System. I tried putting in the EFC for Play but it is not working. I pushed AUX, held setup, 994, setup, and then the play code that you guys posted on the first page, then the play button and the AUX blinked twice but it doesn't work. I have a DVD in right now on the menu waiting for play to be pressed.

EDIT:
Ok I now have it controlling everything I think I need it to control and I am very happy with this guys!! Thank you very much for all the help! One more quick question though... When the batteries die or something, will that reset all the codes I put in?

The programming is written to flash memory, and it will persist "forever" or until someone changes it by writing new values.

This of it like a thumb drive (also called a flash drive)--it's the same memory technology.
