After a few unsuccessful attempts, I was finally able to do a reasonable job at soldering a 6-pin header in one of my URC-6800. I must admit that I had done quite a mess in this one, even cutting one of the traces leading to a JP1 hole. I finally got a 6-pin header well soldered and I was able to repair the trace with Quick Grid Rear Window Defogger repair kit (highly conductive paint) that I had bought to repair worn buttons on my second URC-6800.

Now I am able to use not only my simple interface cable, but also the serial one that I built in the first place to free up my parallel port.

Now I am really enjoying JP1.

Very Happy

Thanks to all the JP1 experts!

François

If you messed up soldering in the 6-pin, I'm guessing that you didn't use flux. I'm mentioning this over and over in an attempt to help out the next person that thinks they can skip using flux.

You guessed right, Rob, I did not use flux when I messed up. But I did not use flux either when I succeeded.

I think the real problem was the technique.

But I think you would have found the process alot easier if you did use flux. Try it next time and let me know.

can you point us in the right direction for some pointers on the proper usage of flux?

There's not much to tell, you just apply a small amount of flux on one or both of the surfaces being soldered. For the 6-pin I find that you just need to apply a small amount to the pads. The solder sticks to the pins easy enough but it's tricky to get it to stick to the pads without flux.

I don't use any flux when soldering in EEPROM chips as it hasn't proven necessary.

Well, I never use flux...but, I do have a problem with it sticking to the iron and not the object that I'm soldering...so, that might help. I'll go get some and give it a shot.
