Can't find files on yahoo group

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Can't find files on yahoo group

Post by felthove »

I read "JP1 for Beginners Rev 1.1" and it specifies that we must download IR.exe and 3 spreadsheets from the yahoo group to get started.

However, none of the specified files are there. I'm assuming they've been updated/renamed. Can anyone tell me which files I DO need or where to find the files specified in the beginners guide?

Thanks!

felthove,
to get started you'll need: 1)IR.exe, 2)RDFs for IR and RM Version 1.11.zip, 3)Devices4.xls, 4)keymap-master.xls

IR.exe
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/files/ (all the files mentioned above are located here).
Go to "Tools", "IR401.zip" is the file you need. You'll also need the file directly below it "RDFs for IR and RM Version 1.11.zip". Be sure you put IR.exe and the RDF files in the same directory.

Devices4.xls
Go to "Tools", "devices4.zip" near the bottom of the list.

keymap-master.xls
Go to "Tools", "keymap-master.zip" is the last one on the list.

I don't think the Devices.zip file that the Beginners guide talks about is used anymore. I know I didn't use it.

All the files I mentioned get updated periodically so the name might change for the next version (i.e. IR401.zip will someday become IR402.zip or something like that, but you'll find the latest version there regardless).

Good luck.

Thanks a bunch. I found the files in the "tools" sections (rather than "programs", as stated) after I posted. Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm just getting started and I had the same problem today. The appears to be that the files have been moved since "JP1 for Beginners Rev 1.1" was written.

I think the previous post answered your question, but maybe the Power's That Be (or "the Man" if you like) can do a quicky fix to the guide.

Also, while on the subject of updates to "JP1 for Beginners", it isn't super clear on what to do with a .txt file for your remote that someone has posted to yahoo groups. I'm sure I'll figure it out once I dig into this more, but if the text could be updated for that, it would be GREAT.

We all recognize the fact that it's outdated and doesn't exactly match the current software version.

We all have said it needs to be updated.

We all haven't been able to find the time to do it.

Everyone needs to remember that this whole JP1 effort is volunteer. We're here because... er... we're addicted to these gizmo's. ;)

Documenting all the finer points of JP1 would be great, however it becomes impractical (time-wise) for many of us. I won't speak for the others, but I find my time is better spent replying to newbie posts than to actually sit down and re-write something like "JP1 for Beginner's". Besides, I don't think any of us can match Tommy's flair when it comes to these things. ;)

Many others have offered, but nothing ever seems to come of it. It's just not as easy as it appears. The last guy who said he'd give it a stab hasn't been heard from since! Anyone know what happened to good ol' Steve?

I think I saw him at WalMart the other day, carrying a large bag full of 8810w remotes...
