No, that's my problem: none of the learns operates the equipment, not even the power button. I know I have a problem somewhere but I can't spot it.
After looking closely at the learns I realized that there are two different protocols that is NEC1 and NEC2. I used NEC1 and it does not work at all. I will give it a try with NEC2 and report the results.

When you said
No, that's my problem: none of the learns operates the equipment, not even the power button. I know I have a problem somewhere but I can't spot it.
I take it you meant none of the things you plugged into the protocol work, not that if you loaded the IR with the learns that those learns won't operate the equipment.

The difference between a NEC1 and a NEC2 is just the way it repeats, so this really shouldn't be the culprit.

On the other hand you mentioned that you needed to load a protocol upgrade, so I assume you are working with a NEC Combo of some kind. I know that we have Onkyo upgrades that use a NEC Combo, so if you don't want to show your work to us for a diagnosis, I'd suggest looking at a Onkyo upgrades to see how they are setup.

I know that the power on the Onkyo receivers is tricky because you need to use two different subdevices for the on/off codes.

Good Luck
Remember to provide feedback to let us know how the problem was solved and share your upgrades.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

It's not that I don't want to show you my work. I just wanted to do everything I could before asking for your help. There is always the risk that I made a stupid mistake and that I will be abusing your precious time.

How do you attach files to a message in this forum?

Thanks

Like I said before, it's admirable that you want to try and fix it yourself, but do you see how much of our time you're taking up by NOT showing us the files. I would be extremely surprised if we didn't instantly spot the mistake once we see your files, as I would be very surprised if you have made a mistake that hasn't been make 100 times before.

I'm also concerned about your earlier comment that the learned signals don't work, because what we're trying to do with the upgrade is replicate the learned signals, so if the learned signals don't work in the first place, it's unlikely that the upgrade will work either. If the learned signals don't work it could be because...

a) you didn't learn them properly, but this is unlikely if they show NEC1 and NEC2 as the protocol.
b) there is a problem with the remote itself. Does the remote work with any of your other devices?
c) there is a problem with the receiver. Does it still respond to the original remote?
doucetlaurier wrote:How do you attach files to a message in this forum?
You don't attach them to messages, you upload them to the file section. There is a link to the file section at the top of every page in this forum. Once there, please navigate to the Diagnosis Area folder and load the files there. Please zip together all the files that we asked for.

Doucetlaurier, don't forget to post links here in your thread.

I happened to be looking at the file section and saw your ONKYO TX-NR708 get loaded into the diagnosis section.

A quick search in the file section shed a whole lot of light onto the problem you are having, but without your RDMU file we still can't see the whole picture.

We have a Onkyo TN-NR807 (Receiver mode only) upgrade in our file section.
pjigar wrote:The remote for Onkyo TX-NR807 receiver is "really" a universal remote. Let me explain. The remote has several "input selector" buttons that allows you to pick which A/V input gets selected. These "input selector" buttons double up as "remote mode" buttons. In other words, when you press "remote mode/input selector" button named "PORT", several buttons of the remotes gets reassigned to new functions (just like any universal remote).
This means that you'll need to capture the entire remote for each mode that you are working in. We have an 807 Receiver Only mode in the file section. If that works for your 708, it would be nice if you could capture the other modes.

It will be interesting to see what you've got going on, when you finally post your files so that we can properly diagnose what went wrong.

Hi

First, I'd like to thank you for helping me. I have made some interesting progress since I posted three files in the diagnosis area. I would like to delete those files before I post the latest ones that are partly working; how can it be done?

On my latest upgrade, I was able to enter four different subdevices. I had to leave one out since the Nec 4DEVCombo allows only 4. Yes, the learns do give 5 different subdevices. I was wondering if that might be the reason why some buttons are not working.

Thanks again

If you click on your file, you'll see "edit" and "x" buttons at the top. I recommend you click "edit" and choose your updated file. That way you can upload your new file, overwriting the old one, but the link to it doesn't change. When your issue is completely resolved, just click "x" to delete your file.

When did you post files? I've been waiting for you to post them so I could look at them. So don't delete them yet, instead post links to them so that we know the files are there and where to find them.

Is the main device code the same in each case? If so, you shouldn't be using the 4Dev combo, you should be using the NEC1 Combo, which would let you combine as many subdevice codes as you need.

HI

Thanks again. I posted my files in the diagnosis area but I was not aware of the fact that I had to give links to them. I must admit that I don't know how to provide a link to my downloaded files.

Yes, the main device code is the same in each case. However some codes are NEC 1, some NEC2. Should I still use NEC1 Combo? I took a look at NEC1 Combo and I did not see any box where I could fill in the subdevices codes.

Waiting for your assistance again before I post the link to my files in the diagnosis area.

The links that you posted work just fine, so I guess you figured that part out.

The learned file that you posted is corrupt as the signature is missing from the file. However, i was able to cut and paste the signature from your other IR file and was able to view it in IR.exe

In your RM file, which uses the 4Dev combo, I see that you've entered sub-device codes 109, 198, 172 and 25 but in the Functions tab, you have used sub-device code 109 for everything. So, the net result is that the only functions that will work are the ones that use the 109 sub-device code.

You can select a different sub-device code by changing the selection in the "dev.sub" column.

The additional twist here is that, while most of the buttons use the NEC1 protocol, a few buttons use the NEC2 protocol, those buttons being the arrow keys and the volume buttons.

You're not going to be able to get all of the functions into one upgrade because you have too many sub-device codes for the 4Dev protocol, and the NEC1 Combo protocol can't send NEC2 signals, so here are your choices...

a) Use the NEC1 Combo and include all of the sub-device codes, but the arrow and volume buttons won't repeat. I think would be OK for the arrows but might be a pain for the volume buttons. You could then fix the volume buttons using keymoves or learned buttons.

b) Use the 4Dev protocol and then use keymoves for any sub-device codes that get left out.

Assuming that you go with the second option, you would need a "helper upgrade" for the sub-device code that gets left out.

Here's an IR file with all of the changes mentioned:

Many of the functions lined up with Onkyo TX-NR807 file that was found in the file section. Given that, I think that you need to check to see if your remote is changing functions, the way pjigar reported.

That's good advice, because we would only normally expect to see subdevice codes 108 and 109 for Onkyo.

Hi

I'm sincerely impressed with the quickness and the contents of your reply.
However I will need some time to read it over and over again and make sure I understand all the suggestions your are making. Even though I created a few upgrades in the past(some of them being in the file section and having been downloaded many times) I am far from being an expert in the field. But I can assure you I will make the best use possible of all the precious information you're giving me. Will you let me confess that I have never used the key move function?

Thanks again for your time and efforts

Hi

The first thing I did was download that 807 file from the file section. Unfortunately my 708 does not respond to any command as the file is. I might give it another try though.

You can't imagine how much I am learning here.

Thanks
