old Cox M7820 with Insignia BRDVD3 via key magic (9xx)

1. Device: Insignia BRDVD3 (usa model, non -CA)
2. Type of device: Blu Ray DVD player
3. Year: 2009
4. JP1/UEI Remote model: Cox M7820 (URC-7820)
5. Do you have a JP1 cable? No
6. Still have original remote? No
7. Checked the file section? it's there but but need key magic for old model remote
8. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? ?
9. Partially working setup code? no
10. Learning remote question? no

I've poked around enough to learn I am probably going to have to buy an RCA RCRP05B but I just wanted to see if any of the experts can give me something else to try just in case.

This is the very early model 7820B00-SA not the newer M7820BP1

It has the 1043 signature as mentioned here:

It's stamped jp1.1 but really is supposedly jp1.2
(I don't have a cable so that's moot anyway)

Works fine for my TV and OTA DTV converter box.

But none of the codes the amazing mdavej posted here work for the Insigna BRDVD3:

But it does seem to respond properly to most 9xx codes.

If I try to set AUX to audio code 1609, it just gives me the solid light at the end, indicating an error or missing code I guess.

So anything else I can try or am I just out of luck?

Does your quote back of what I said mean there's no way it will work, even with key magic overriding the codes?

I mean it "seems" to behave with 9xx, ie.

I press DVD, one blink
I hold setup, two blinks
I enter 994, two blinks
I press setup once, one blink
I enter code 34906 (nothing)
I press power button (to assign), two blinks

then power does nothing but blink the dvd when I hit it, no device response from the BRDVD3

I guess I should try to figure out a code for a known working device first to test the extended key magic.

Whoops that last post got away from me. Audio/1609 uses a Nec1 Combo device 133.

That means that this code has a device of 133 and many sub device codes.

So what we need to do is find a signal that can send that combination.

While the Audio 1609 is the most comon code that has that combination, Video 1913 is a more likely candidate for a remote that might be a jp1.1.

Other less likely candidates woutl be Audio 1271, Audio 1750 or Video 1829.

I tried downloading the manual, but couldn't get it to open so I couldn't check if any of these codes were in your remote.

Ah, very interesting stuff.

Let me try to find the real manual for the older model that I have, the newer manuals list 1609 so I know it's not right.

Oh and trying code 1913 does the same long solid light indicating error (on any device button).

Tried all these codes on the aux & dvd button, same error: 1271 1750 1829.

You know what's interesting, I have an even older cox M7810, which doesn't have an exposed JP1 jack at all, but responds to 9xx codes.

It DOES accept 1609 on AUX !

Then the #5 key will open and close the dvd tray.

But it does not accept 994 key magic

Can't win.

I looked at that text file you provided, and I couldn't find any of those codes either.

So I researched the Insignia BRDVD3 a little further, and found that this uses a Device 133, Subdevice 237.

I don' t have any information on any setup code in any remote that has that combination built in.

You might want to talk to your cable company and see if you can get a newer remote.

I checked the list of setup codes in the "1043" model of the Cox remote and there aren't any setup codes like audio/1609 that would work, so your only options are to (a) get a new remote or (b) get a JP1 cable.

Unless this $5 remote (OARC03G) by some miracle has the extended 994 key magic.

Ah, thanks for the confirmation, I might pick one up as a spare.

Before I saw your reply I ended up ordering a lightly used RCA off Amazon using prime for free shipping. So I guess the extra buttons and knowing it can use JP1 if I ever get a cable is nice for the few extra dollars.

It's stupid how many "universal" remotes I have from over the years, easily over $100 spent and all the codes are outdated now. JP1 is the way to go I guess!

Yup. I'm still using a 1999 model Radio Shack 15-1994, which is only possible because of JP1.

There are many documents that show you how to build the various interfaces. If you price out the parts you'll see why they are so expensive.

Like you, I was very hesitant to pay more for a cable than for my remote, especially back in 2000, when the software was all in a pre-beta state. However last month when my interface stopped talking, I had no qualm about buying a new one, I considered it inexpensive.
