Transfer Code from one OFA to another

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Transfer Code from one OFA to another

Post by nevwdr »

Ok I'm new, I have read a whole load of stuff and just want some gentle reassurance..... :-) Please.....

OK, I have a OFA URC1660 remote (this is a UK Sky+ clone), it has what looks like JP1.2 printed next to the pins. This remote works great but wont control mu Universal Media TV.

OFA sent me a new remote a URC7740, they told me the code I need is 1106. Sure enough it all works fine. I cant tell if it is JP1 or JP1.2/3 though!?

Trouble is the new remote looks pants and does not look like a sky one.

So I was wondering,

1. Can I copy the code from the URC7740 to my URC1660?
2. Is the URC7740 a JP1.2? Or do ineed to make both cables?
3. I cant find a RDF files for either remote, do I need one?

What I was hoping is that I could just download from the 7740 and then upload into the URC1660 and set up the correct key mappings. Is this correct?

I am fairly technically competant, so enough direction into the right place would be enough, anyone who can help will be appreciated! :-)

The problem is that we do not have RDFs (Remote Definition Files) for EITHER of the two remotes you're trying to use here.

Although some preliminary work had been done with Sky remotes in the past, they were all older ones that were JP1 remotes. If your Sky+ remote clearly says JP1.2, then it is a remote that has not previously been identified in this forum/group. To make it useful with the JP1 tools, you would need to :
(1) buy/make a cable;
(2) Download the RAW data from the remote into IR.exe;
(3) Post that IR file in the diagnosis area for an expert to subsequently work you through creating an RDF for it.

You need to do the same for your 7740, but with the added complication that we don't know whether the JP1.2/1.3 cable for your Sky+ remote will work with it, or whether you also will need a JP1 cable. I STRONGLY suspect that if this is a new remote from UEIC, then it will likely work with the same cable you buy/make for the Sky+ remote.

Regardless, you would have to have RDF's created for BOTH remotes, and then, there is still the chance that the code you want to extract from the 7740 will be inaccessible. Cades that are "built-in" to the remotes cannot be extracted by our tools. Only UPGRADE codes that are added after-the-fact can be extracted using the JP1 tools.

You're potentially better off LEARNING the codes from your 7740 to a learning remote and getting them that way, but that requires getting yet ANOTHER learning remote, or creating one of the learning widgets described elsewhere in this forum.

Thanks, sorry I meant RDF not RPC. My coder acronyns getting the better of me!

OK I will make both cables ad extracthe raw data and post here over Xmas.

PS the sky remote is not a "true" sky one, it is one that is a special "clone" from OFA. See:

http://www.argos.co.uk/ProductDisplayTR ... er=5348671

Will also look into the IR device method too, but I think thay have added the code to the 7740 as the TV i have s not listed.

Thanks, hopefully someone will point me in the right direction once I post the RAW files

I suspect both remotes are JP1.2 or JP1.3, so a JP1.2/3 (Flash) cable would work for both of them (use this schematic).

If need be, I can get the TV/1106 code from UEI.

Do I have to build an infrared reader, or can I just use something like this:

Is very cheap, but will it work?

Why do you want to build an IR reader? If it's to communicate with the remotes, just just need a JP1 (Flash) cable, which you can make or buy.
