USB to Parallel cable - will it work?

I think you would need a card or cable that emulates the parallel port with ECP or EPP capabilities. Those aren't cheap, and a new (to you) old laptop with a parallel port would cost you about the same, usually.

IMO, that would work, since CardBus is a sort of extension of the ISA bus in a computer, making anything on it a sort of hardware port.
