JP1 USB vs Add parallel port card

JP1 USB vs Add parallel port card

What are the pro's and con's of the two on a new computer that currently does not have a parallel port to program my JP1 ver 1.0 remotes?

If it is better to add the card does anybody here have a source for a 'half height' PCI or PCIe card? As the case is a 'Dell' slim style case.

I found a few "low profile" parallel port cards at Newegg, this one is the cheapest:

Is this what you're looking for?

Price is just about the same as a USB cable from Tommy Tyler. Faced with the choice I'd go for the cable, it's beautifully made and usable on any PC.

I'd go with the cable hands down. Not only will you be able to use it on nearly any machine but it also overcomes some of the more quirky issues with JP1 cables in the past (ie: trying dead batteries, new batteries, one battery out, etc)

Tommy builds great cables, go with the USB
this JP1 stuff is a sickness!

I did not expect the cost of the card to be so high as I has purchaed them in the past (six years ago) for less the $10..

But I have given Tommy a heads up that I will be ordering one of his USB cables shortly..

Standard height Parallel port cards are still available for $10 -- see Newegg for examples. The cards themselves these days are usually only a couple of inches high but the bracket is standard height. I haven't seen the insides of it, but I believe that your new Dell needs one of the new "low profile" expansion cards with a short bracket. Take a look at the drawings that are included in this document:

Before making a decision, you need to open up your case and take a look.
