How to widen the line of sight of a components IR receiver?

When I am close (within 6 feet) from my HT, some components are finicky and don't always accept all of the macros commands.

Short of tin-foiling the whole room, does anyone know a simple method to help to widen the line of sight of a components IR receiver?

Which remote are you using? Several of the mroe recent OFA remotes have just one IR-LED and it's a bit more recessed than is ideal. Their reasoning for recessing it so much is to protect it in the event that the remote gets dropped, but we have found that by pokling the IR-LED through a bit further the performance is improved.

Assuming you have a white ceiling, have you tried aiming the remote UP? Funny, tho, I have exactly the opposite problem. The more lumps and holes (the rougher) the ceiling is, the better this seems to work. I'd guess a 10-15 degree forward angle, and about mid-point left and right should work. OK, that's the "simple" method, if that doesn't help, you may need to go to a little less simple.
