Again - thanks to all for the suggestions. It really helps to get the ideas of others.

I will re-open the case today and try cleaning the circuit board thoroughly. As the chip can be written and read through the JP1 cable, I am fairly sure that the chip itself is undamaged and that it must be the "connections" to the chip that is used by the processor to get at the contents.

I will report back when I have tried that in case it helps others in future.

Unfortunately an alcohol cleaning of the circuit board was unsuccessful. There is only some alcohol remaining to drown my sorrow (that is meant to be a joke for those who might worry about drinking that kind of alcohol).

So a logical swap of the two 15-1994 means that the faulty one (that reports no EEPROM even though IR can read and write it) is relegated to the simpler life in the basement where macros, LKP etc are not so critical.

When Rob opens the store again, I will be looking for another JP-1 to play with. I might be tempted for a JP 1.3, but I would need (yet) another cable too!

The EEPROM chip is remarkably robust, and it is extremely unlikely that anything has "fried" it, particularly immersion in drinking water. Unless you live in a swamp there's been enough time by now for everything to dry out, but look closely at the area of the eight pins of the EEPROM chip for any signs of a deposit of any material that might have been left when the water evaporated. Ditto the area around the 6-pin JP1 connector.

Can we assume since you said the older unit "accepts and works with the file", that means you've tried to upload and/or download the old unit SINCE this problem began, to verify that the interface itself is still working properly?

Yes Tommy,

I have uploaded the "main floor" program into the older unit and it works fine. Similarly I have uploaded the "basement" program into the newer (faulty) unit and the same symptoms (it uses the programmed device settings, but no macros or keymoves work).

I also cleared memory on the faulty unit using IR and when next uploading, IR reports that the memory was cleared. Also when changing from the non-extended basement program to the extended main floor one, IR detects the signature difference.

So the interface and the chip seem to be working, but the faulty unit does not seem to realise it has an EEPROM. Based on earlier suggestions, when doing a 981, it only flashes twice whereas I believe it should flash 4 times if it detects the chip.

I have looked and cleaned carefully around the chip and other components (and over the front of the board completely) but must admit that I did not check quite so carefully around the JP1 connector itself.

I may try that just one more time!
