8910 - hardware basics

Post by Zellarman »

My daughter turned my 8910 into a rattle this morning, and I decided to try and fix it. It turns out that a 1" dia. ring of armature motor winding wire (hope my possibly wrong description is adequate enough) came loose from it's glued position, and the connections also broke. Whatever happened after I opened it seems to some how have fixed it, and though this winding of wire is still not connected, I haven't yet discovered any problems. I've already glued it back into place, and plan on re-soldering the connections, but can somebody tell me what it does?

It sounds like the modem for the phone upgrade. See this thread:

It's almost certainly the Modem. Mine has been rattling for years and no ill effects.

If you're a JP1-er, you will NEVER, EVER, EVER, use the modem, so it's no big whoop.

If the noise annoys you, then just pull the thing out and you won't miss it.

If you're a purist/completist (some might say anally-retentive) and it simply MUST be "right" or something deep in your soul will gnaw at you until it is "right" again, OR is you actually use it for modem downloads occasionally, then by all means attempt a repair.

SHOOT, too bad I used such a good glue (construction adhesive) putting it back in, I'd probably end up destroying the circuit board if I tried removing it now, but I'll skip the re-soldering of the connections. You guys may have just saved my remote from me melting it! Thanks

Yup, it's the modem, and you only need to use regular hot glue to re-attach it. But like the Capn said, JP1-ers have no need for the modem anyway.
