8910 extender - Remote hangs after activation

Post by jayerndl »

I am using a URC-8910 with the extender listed as 8910ex1_1.zip in the files section. I used as a starting point a test file with only a few devices in it. This file works fine. When I started to add devices I was running out of upgrade memory so I deleted all the devices/prototcols except TV:1800/$0180. Now when I upload the file to the remote and press the power button to activate it activates fine but the next button I press (any button) the remote hangs (all segments of the LCD are on) and I have to take out a battery to fix it. I have uploaded the .IR file to the diagnostic area http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=4592. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I see no obvious problem with your IR file (I really can't tell about all of your protocol upgrades, since I don't use any of those devices, but they are rather large, and appear to have incorrect notes attached to them), but, when in doubt, standard troubleshooting techniques apply:

Go back to the last configuration you had that worked:
I used as a starting point a test file with only a few devices in it. This file works fine.
Instead of making LOTS of changes at once:
.. so I deleted all the devices/prototcols except TV:1800/$0180.
... add devices/protocols ONE at a time, remove Special function devices/protocols ONE at a time, and see what breaks it.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem was but after starting over from scratch and adding the new devices/protocols everything is now working. I am still almost out of upgrade memory. The 8910 extender appears to use much more memory than the 15-1994. Thanks.

Post your new IR file and maybe someone can offer some advice on how you can conserve your available memory. Before saving the IR file, please try to add as many comments as possible to stay ahead of the "what do you use this code for?" type questions.

Yeah, what HE said. I would add also that you should zip together not only your IR file, but also your upgrades (KM/RM files)and upload and provide a link to that. Your combo upgrades, particularly Device Combiner, eat up a LOT of memory, and perhaps there are savings to be found there.

As a first cut, however, I would imagine that there is a built-in setup code (VCR or DVD/0525 or 0571) that would provide the vast majority of your Pioneer DVD functions which you could supplement with a handful of keymoves (you seem to have ample keymove memory). You may need help getting the keymoves formatted properly for these 2-byte commands. They would be easiest ot create using KM or RM.

While we're waiting for the IR and RM files, I took a look at the original IR file posted and I notice that there are 3 Tivo upgrades and they all use the old custom exec. For starters, these could be changed to use the official Tivo executable, which would eliminate the need for a protocol upgrade.

Alternatively, these could be reduced to one upgrade using the TiVo_dynamic_unit_sel special protocol.

Uhh.... Rob, I think you pasted the wrong link. This is a link to a Roku Soundbridge upgrade, not Tivo dynamic unit selection.

I have made some additonal changes including using the official tivo protocol. Everything is still working and I have a little more free memory than before (83 free for Upgrade, 677 free for Move/Macro). Here is the link to my latest IR and device files. I should be ok for now but if I need to add another device I may have to do something creative. Thanks for the help.

I didn't see an upgrade in the file section for the Shinybow video switcher, so I created one based on the data in your combo upgrade...
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=4594

I messed around with your IR file and came up with this...
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=4595
(237 free for upgrade, 611 for keymove/macro)

I converted your Pioneer DVD upgrade back to using the official exec.
I broke out the Shinybow from the device combiner and used keymoves instead.
I replaced all three Tivo upgrades with one that uses the advanced select protocol.

Give it a shot.

Rob,

Thanks for help! Everything works great except a couple of minor issues that were easily fixed. There were 2 key moves for the tivo unit1 and tivo unit2 that were still referencing the old setup codes (1618 and 1619). I changed them to the correct (1620) code and they were fine. Also the new Pioneer DVD code did not work. I reverted back to the one I was using and had to add the upgrade protocol. I still have 205 free for upgrade and 611 for keymove/macro. This gives me plenty of room to grow. Thanks again for all the help.

I would recommend that you go back to the one you had earlier that used the official Pioneer MIX protocol. Even though it uses 2 bytes for each button, the fact that you don't need a protocol upgrade means you will end up using less memory.
