What is this 12-pin header?

What is this 12-pin header?

Post by grimholtz »

Hi,

I recently purchased the JP1-to-USB cable. It came with a 12-pin male-to-male header. What is this for? My JP1 remotes don't use 12 pins.

Thanks,
grimholtz

The 6-pin connectors that we use are created by breaking away 6-pins from a longer strip. The reason why JP1 vendors include free 6-pin connectors with their cables is for people who have remotes without pins, but most people won't actually need them. Having said that, I don't know why he included a 12-pin strip with your cable. If you ever find that you need a 6-pin, just break it in two.

I guess I should re-read the FAQ to see if this follow-up question is answered there, but what is the 6-pin connector for? Feel free to not answer since I haven't done any due diligence.

It's what makes JP1 possible. You've already re-programmed your R5k remote, how did you do that? Answer: you connected your JP1 cable to the 6-pin connector that was factory installed in the remote. Well, what about people who have remotes like the URC-7800, RCU810 or URC-9960 that don't have the 6-pin installed? When you buy the 6-pins in bulk they cost pennies each, so including a free one with a cable is easy, but if you had to buy one yourself, the shipping alone would be at least $5.
