Extender question on 7800

Post by mikegerard »

Hi-

I tried to use the extender on the 7800 a while back and could not get it to work. I went through all the steps but never really got it to control my tv. I eventually gave up and went back to my non extended setup (good thing I followed the instructions and saved it :D

A couple of questions:
How do you know that the extender loaded properly?

I'm really only planning on using the extender to make pressing the device keys select the device and change the amp's input to that device. In the non extended remote I use Setup then device (DVD) to execute a macro to do this. Is there a non extender way to do this or is the extender the way to go?

Thanks,
Mike

After you get the blinks telling you the extender is downloaded into the C7, press TV then Power buttons to enable it. You should get 4 blinks. Additionally, if you now press any device key, the LED is on while you hold the button. In the unextended remote the LED just blinks once.

To somewhat answer your other question: C7 has the fastest extender on earth, but not all the functions you read about here. So shift-device is still the simplest way to do things, as you do in unextended. But the speed is amazing, and that alone is worth it.

That said, once the simple setup is working, there is DSM and D/LKP bundled in one protocol, but it's a bit rough to set up. There is also DSM standalone, which is easier to setup.
DSM=device specific macro
LKP=long key press/double key press
and you get the Pause protocol straight from KM or RM.

In general ... ask a question (with LOTS of detail) here in these fora. If it involves an IR file that isn't doing what you expect/want it to do, 90% of the time somebody will ask you to upload it to the diagnostic section and post a link to it here, so you'll save time getting your problem fixed by just doing this at the outset.
