Solved: Need some help installing der URC-5550 extender

Post by Docmarten »

EDIT I have managed by trial and error to solve my problems. I hope to be able soon to post a short how-to which might be helpful to other beginners.

Hello all,
after having soldered successfully my JP1 cable and having learned some basics of IR.exe, RM, EFCs etc, it now seems that I don't understand how to install the extender for my URC-5550 after having tried rather hard. As the possibility to use the device buttons to switch on the different areas of Media Portal (Radio, TV, MP3 etc.) were the main reason to dive into jp1, I would really love to get this working with some help from the forum.
The readme of the extender at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=1454 says, among other things:

Code: Select all

"Here are the steps to install the extender.

1. Replace the RDF in your IR directory with the one in the ZIP file. See the Divergent Features document for an explanation of what is in the new RDF. Note: This new RDF sets the time in the remote to the same as the time in your computer. Thanks to Mark Pauker for this cool feature!

2. Load your config in IR.

3. Add this device:

Upgrade code 0 = 6F D1 (Misc Audio/2001)
 FF 00 21 66 06
End

4. Load in the following protocol:

Upgrade protocol 0 = 01 FF (P8/740)

End

5. Set up a key move (with any EFC or hex code) to call Misc Audio 2001.

6. Save your configuration (optional)

7. Load it into your remote and use your key move to activate the
extender. You can tell the extender is loaded because when you press
a button, both the AM & PM indicators light on the LCD.

My questions are:
1. In other places and in some forum posts (e.g. http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6749), I have read, however, that I should always replace the RDF of the extender with the most recent RDF file found in the RDF section. What is true? I have also read that I should install ExtInstall, but as far as I understand, this program needs special extender packages (with install.bat etc.)
2. With point 3. above ("Add this device..."), it is not clear to me where to add this in IR. I went to the Device tab, clicked Add, but then? where to put the three lines above?
3. With point 4. above ("Load the following protocol..."), similar problems: I imagine that I have to switch to the Protocol tab in IR. But when I copy and paste the code, the first and the last line are suppressed. Also, I don't know what "Protocol ID (in hexadecimal)" I should put into the corresponding field.
4. Problems continue with 5. I know how to set up a key move, but I have no idea how to "call Misc Audio 2001" with it. Should I programm a key move to any key? And how can it call the Exender?

Resuming my questions in a simple way: How can I put the extender into the rc and get it working?
Best regards from Heidelberg
Martin
