I want to move RM to Java 5.0

Post by gfb107 »

For a number of reasons, I'd like to upgrade the version of Java required by RM up to 1.5.

There's been a handful of bugs recently that would have been caught by the compiler if I were using some of the enhancements in the new version of Java.

Are there any strong objections from the user community?

Not sure what Java 1.5 corresponds to. I'm currently on J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 with update 6 installed. (I believe it's the latest JRE version) How does this correlate with Java 1.5?

I don't suppose it should be any problem, as long as folks can figure out easily where to update their Java from when required.

Edit: I just noticed that you wrote 5.0 in you subject line and 1.5 in your post. Is the 1.5 a typo?

Again, since everyone downloads Java to run RM anyways, I see no reason why there should be objections to downloading the LATEST version.

The version number for Java are strange. 1.5(.0) and 5.0 are the same.

See Version 1.5.0 or 5.0?.

Not all RM users download Java specifically for RM. Some may have other Java applications they use and those might require specific older versions of Java. I know that Rob has not been able to use RM at work because he had to use Java 1.3 for some reason. This change doesn't help or hurt his situation, as RM currently requires Java 1.4.1 or later.

You are already using Java 5.0, so there would be no impact to you.

If you're not planning any changes to the RMDU format, I say go for it. Even if some users are stuck with 1.4.1, at least they can continue using 1.59.

Moving to the latest SDK is a good thing. 1.5 offers the developer many new features that make life easier and the 1.5 JVM offers a nice performance boost as well.

Only bad thing I can say is that many Linux distros don't use Java 1.5 yet. Also, since I use Blackdown Java on my system, I'd no longer be able to use them since they are only up to 1.4 as well.
