JP1 in the press; IEEE Spectrum March 2006

Post by gbuskirk »

The JP1 project received some positive press in an editorial article on the last page of the March 2006 issue of the IEEE Spectrum magazine. IEEE Spectrum is the magazine sent to all members of the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers. The writer describes his experience of buying an open-box DVD player sans remote, presuming he could get a universal to work with it. In the end, he found the JP1 project, built an interface, created and upgrade, and got it working. He concludes by saying something like "That's the kind of thing engineers are supposed to be able to do." Congratulations, JP1 contributors.

Hey Glenn, any chance that I could get a photocopy or a scan of that article?

One correction though, it was an HDTV tuner, not a DVD player

But he never mentions "JP1" by name!!!! :x

I see that he doesn't mention UEI by name either, so this might be a strategy of sorts to protect you from the  lawyers  , at least a bit. But really, not much can be quiet in the internet world.
Nice article.

I wonder what the point of an article like this is? I mean, he's telling everyone that he's discovered the secret to programming a remote so that it can control anything, but he's not actually SHARING that secret, so what's the point? He doesn't even use any words in the article that would facilitate a good internet search, so if you didn't know about JP1 before reading that article, I don't see how you'd know about it after wards.

Good point. Wonder how many e-mails he has got to the address at the bottom of the article asking what the secret is.

In some fields there is a "Publish or Perish" situation. It looks better in print if he appears to be the hero of the story (the problem solver) and didn't just look stuff up on the internet.

This was probably not a "howto" article but rather an exposition on personal achievment and discovery. (literary rather than technical)
Just call me Zaphod (or Steve) --- I never should have started using numbers in a screen name but I just can't stop now.

It depends, as well, on his remit for articles and whether the editor chopped bits out for whatever reason. Some make a point of never mentioning any source that might be seen to be associated with "hacking" and others omit such sources out of fear that a reader will try something and then blame the author if it all goes wrong.

If you google "program remote", "JP1 Interface for the 15-1994" with the url "www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/" comes up at the bottom of page 3. Perhaps a keyword update would help things.

If you google "underquark" you get twice as many JP1 hits.
