What is the initial device when extender is enabled?

Post by ElizabethD »

Is it undefined? Device index zero? Device which enables the extender TV or PVR on 6131?

It's typically the first one on the general tab which on most is TV. That is why with most extenders that get activated with TV/Power work by just pressing the power button. The 6131 by default comes up in PVR mode since that is what it is designed for.

Thanks Nils. Known state is what I was looking for :D
Now I should have asked, so here comes the next one - it comes up in PVR mode. is the O-keyset enabled at that point ("other" on 8910)? Or is nothing until you press some device keys?

It's funny that you mentioned that hitting power alone might activate the extender. I may have seen it once or twice, though I routinely press whatever the instructions say.

All buttons for a device are active after a reset since that is the normal state of the remote. O groups etc. are part of the extender so they only get effective after activating the extender. However, on devices that have volume punch through in the native remote and it is set in the general panel that would be active before the extender.

Is this question about the 6131 or the 8910 or remotes in general?

I don't have time to look up the answer for 6131 or 8910. I recall the answer for 8810 and 2104:

Those settings for the 2104 are dangerously random right after you activate the extender. They aren't limited to the actual device modes but could contain garbage that will corrupt the remote's memory when it tries to look up a key for the setup code for that mode. After activating the 2104 extender, before using any non-macro keys, you must execute a macro that establishes those settings. On my config, I need to execute two macros: The button for the upstairs or downstairs TV, that establishes some settings and establishes what room the remote thinks it's in, followed by one of the vcr buttons which establishes everything else. Only then are normal keys safe to use.

For 8810, it is much more robust. The initial values (for right after you activate the extender) are on IR.exe's setup sheet.

Mainly for 7800, 8910, 6131.

That's what I was afraid of. So it seems safer to assume unknown state. I thought of doing one instead of two buttons and starting from a known state would be cool. Icing on the cake. I'm just tweaking along the lines similar to your two room thing.

Thanks a bunch.
