Simple Remote For Elderly Parents

Post by katiebear00 »

Can someone recommend a very simple JP1 remote for my elderly parents? I gave them one of my 15-2116's but it was too confusing for them. Looking for a limited number of buttons, preferably big ones. They only need to control a tv and a tivo.

I think I saw a thread about this. Try to search for a name like wee remote or similar. I think there was a link to Remote Central where they carried a review. It might even be a jp1 remote, not sure.

I'm not sure the weemote is a good choice:

what about a remote like this one:
http://www.ofausa.com/remote.php?type=URC%204330

If that one won't work, can you tell us why not?

It's not in the remotechart.xls so I don't know if it's jp1'able.

Remote Central shines on the reviews and instructions, oh! and thanks Jeff for the links.
There is a weemote for seniors

Setup codes for weemote2
http://www.remotecentral.com/weemote/codes2.htm
How to program both
http://www.remotecentral.com/weemote/program.htm
I think they look goofy but might be just fine and not confusing.

Now if you could just add an HUGE EEPROM and JP1 connector, write an extender (it would need to create about 5 levels of x-shifting), and get Device multiplexing, Macros, LKP/DKP protocols modified, you could conceivably set it up to do EVERYTHING the 2116 does!

Also a dv version.

I have been considering it for a while for my grandson to nav those games on his Thomas The Tank Engine DVDs.

The thing I have been wondering about is the hole above the battery compartment marked usb port.

Thanks for the great suggestions, but I don't think any of these will fit the bill because they can't control a tivo. Edit: whoops I see the wee remote can learn. That's perfect. Thanks!!

You want the 6131. Look at the two different models, and pick the one you like best and buy a modified one from Rob.

I like the 6131, but I'll bet the buttons are too small for katiebear00's intentions. How did the one I linked above look? Is that one jp1-able?

Yea, the 6131 would baffle my parents. The wee remote that you posted does not have JP1, but the wee remote DV has a learning function so I can program in the basic tivo commands. That looks like the winner. Thanks for all the input!

The one problem I could see with the wemote DV is that is meant to only control the DVD and didn't have volume buttons. You could define buttons that did volume, but that adds to the confusion factor.
