need help installing files

Where do I even start installing what files to where as have no idea where to begin Can someone please tell me what goes where i bougt the oneforall 6910 and read a review on this group.
can somebody explasin where all the folders and subfolder belong first

As a matter of fact there are installer programs that anyone can download and use for even this purpose. Wish I knew of the one I had already d/ld of Cnet I think I ned the logical placement of folders ands sub folders and no text files in anyy of them where to extract them to at all even the J!.zip file has several zip/rar files in all the subfolders send me an example of the logical flow at least if I knew that I could design a working installer prg that would do just that

Ahhh I think I understand what you are asking. What I did is put it all in a folder I called remote. When extracting the files to it they will make 2 subfolders called images and rdf with the files needed in there. Some folks have to put a dll (I forget the name at the moment) in there windows system32 folder but not most. Then made shortcut to ir and rm.

Most of the programs don't care where they are installed.
I installed IR6.15 in C:\JP1
RM is in C:\RM (make sure to unzip preserving directory structure)
RDFs are in C:\RDFs

The first time you run RM it will ask you where you installed the RDFs.
You have to tell IR where the RDFs are installed. If I remember correctly, it's File -> Set paths -> RDFs

I've often thought though that it would be cool to have a setup.exe type program that would create a new directory for JP1 and neatly load everything into place. This exe could automatically update the registry and the RemoteMaster.properties file so that IR and RM know where to find the RDFs, etc. It could also drop DecodeIR.dll into the system folder.

The package could also install the current version of the Java runtime environment for you.

Then, when certain vendors include CDs with their JP1 cables, they could include this program also. It remove one more of the variables that people can mess up when they try to get started.

If that is indeed what Micelle was talking about, and if she's volunteering to write such a program, I'd be willing to help out with the specifics.

The only negative to such an install package is keeping it up to date. Any time any of the individual components gets updated, the package should be updated as well.

The components in the package would need to be updated, but unless there were significant changes, the setup.exe program wouldn't need to change.

I do agree with you though, however there are a couple of vendors who are already including CDs with their cables, so the problem already exists.

I'd be willing tto create an installer program to unrar all the main files I need to know exactly where to unrar all the various parts for it first and even be willing to uploa the install ini file so when ever addition modules are added any one can modify a newer version of the installer program.
As I said previously anyone can download the free install creater prg from CNET Softpedia or almost any other download site
I just don't have it right now so can't remember the name going bacxk to downloads.comand just do a search for installers again

I found a program called "Install Creator 2.0 build 22" over at CNET, which could be the one Michelle is talking about. It comes in a free version and a pro ($149) version.

thanks but I still need to know the Hiearchy of the folder structure where exactly to uncompress all the rar files then the installer can read and compress and the hierarchal structure etc then tell the installer all that needs to be done and install them and create shortcuts in start menu quick launch and systray menus if the user so desires
Since this my first time as well
by creating one compressed install file wil also eliminate the need for all the several rar files contained in all the subfolders thusly saving hard drive space.
if you need to reinstall anything you can use the install programs modify menu then

The JP1 tools don't require that you use any particular folder names for it's components, so whatever file structure one of might come up with would be a matter of personal preference.

I already made a sample install progam that can install all files I already dow loaded that are necessary to get started with a start menu/program files group and an optional desktop shortcut
but I'm not exactly sure that I have all the neccesary files yet
as well as the licence agreement and a posible remote control.bmp for the the install screen as well.
used the install creator you found to create it.if you're intereste I could send you the file that I already created instal.itt from the install creator or both the.itt file for now I'll just hold the jp1 remote control install program at least until I unrared all the rar files in all the subfolders as well and then just delete the rar files entirely

Here's how I would do it.

Folders
1) Create a folder called "JP1" that the user could place wherever they want.
2) Under it create folders called IR, RM, KM, PB and RDFs
3) Under IR, create a folder called "IR Files"
4) Under RM, create a folder called "RM Upgrades"
5) Under KM, create a folder called "KM Upgrades"
6) Under PB, create a folder called "PB Files"

Programs
1) Load IR and all it's components into the IR folder
2) Load RM and all it's components into the RM folder
3) Load KM and all it's components into the KM folder
4) Load PB and all it's components into the PB folder
5) Unzip the current RDF zip file into the RDFs folder.
6) Unzip the current maps and images zip file into the appropiate RM folders.

Extras
1) Download the current Java runtime enviroment and install it.
2) Place a copy of the DecodeIR.dll file in the Windows/System folder. (Some of the other programs, like IR, may include a copy of DecodeIR.dll in their zip files. Do not put it in the programs folder if it's also going to be in the system folder)

This is off the top of my head, there's probably bits that I've missed.

RM already creates an Upgrades sub-folder, which is the initial default directory for opening upgrade files.
