Limit on number of DSMs w/ Extender 2?

Post by lnoland1 »

I am trying to modify a remote which I programmed a couple years ago. I am using what I believe is referred to as "Extender 2" (that's how IR refers to it, anyway) on an 8811 remote. I tried creating some DSMs using the "Spcl Prot Fns" tab of IR (I downloaded version 6.15 of IR and the new RDFs) but while the first one I created seems to work fine, four others I created do not work at all (the keys I mapped them to continue to work as before I mapped the macros).

There are a few obvious possibilities:
1. The problem is due to the fact that I am using an old version of the extender (I didn't bother looking to see if there was a newer version as I was afraid moving to a newer version might force me to have to learn a lot of new stuff and make a lot of changes in my current setup).
2. I am not using IR or the DSM protocol properly (the documentation for DSMs in the extender docs does not match the special protocols handling in the current version of IR and I could not find any clear documentation on how to use that section of IR).
3. There is a limit of one DSM even though IR allows one to create more.

While there are probably other possibilities, I'm betting on #2. I was going to post my ir file here so that perhaps someone could see what I was doing wrong, but I don't see anything here about attaching a file, though I have seen links in other messages. Perhaps if I just described what I am doing:

On the "Spcl Prots Fns" tab I did an "Add" and chose "Aux" and "FWD" as my bound device/key pair. For the type I chose: DSM (TV:1103). For the macro, I defined it like any other macro on the Macros tab. After entering it, the HexCmd column contains: $6A $A6 $78 $16 $7F $3A

When I upload the image to my remote, switch to Aux and press SHIFT-FWD, however, it simply acts as if I'd pressed the FWD key.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, first of all, if you mapped it to the "FWD" key, you don't push "shift-FWD" to execute it, you push "FWD".

What you ARE seeing, however, as a result of pushing "shift-FWD" is what we refer to as "shift-cloaking" - in that when you activate a shifted button and there is nothing assigned to that shifted button, the remote looks up whatever command is mapped to the current device for that button and executes it, even if you have a keymove or macro "overwriting" it.

So to activate your DSM, don't press "shift-FWD", just press "FWD".

If you're still confused and need to upload your file, at the top of this page is a link to the "file section". Once there, go to the Diagnostic page, at the top of which is an "upload" button. The instructions should take you the rest of the way.

I'm sorry -- I typed that wrong. I mapped it to the shift-FWD key.

Thanks for the response. I will upload the file later. Right now I'm having other problems with it -- I loaded in the upgrade for my DVD player and ran out of upgrade memory so now I'm pondering ways of freeing up some memory.

Thanks again.

OK, I don't know how or why, but my device-specific macros have started mysteriously working now. Somehow in cleaning things up after solving my out-of-memory problems I must have changed something relevant, but I am not sure what. Anyway, they are working as I expected now so I guess I am good.

Thanks much for your willingness to help.

You may have just changed the order of the macros and keymoves during the cleanup. Look to see if you have a regular keymove on the same button as the DSM's. If you did and they were ahead of the DSM's in the image that would account for them now working.

Well, I don't now but I did change a lot of stuff in order to free up memory so anything is possible. Thanks for the reminder, though -- in checking I found that I had recently created a new macro which was overlaying functions on a couple of my devices.
