Invalid KM file

The file at

seems to have a problem. When I try to Load it in KM 8.35 I get the message " Not a valid KM file". I'm sure it's a version problem, since
it says KM 5.06, but I don't know how to convert it to something I can use with 8.35.

Open the KM .txt file in notepad.
Copy the ENTIRE FILE to the clipboard (Highlight the whole thing and hit CTRL-C)
Open KM, and instead of "Load" use "Import"
Voila!

For some reason, KM 8.35 can't load files that old anymore. I fired up KM 8.23 and it was able to load the file, so I re-saved it as an 8.23 file, which you should be able to open using KM 8.35:

Thanks! Actually, I had just gone back to the file section and found the 8.23 version and thought "oh my god, why didn't I see that before!"

Now that I have loaded the file I see that it seems to be for Sony CD players rather than my Sony STR D990 Rcvr/Amp.

What I am trying to do is load the Advanced Codes in
http://www.hifi-remote.com/codes2/amp_0158.shtml
into KM so I can add them to the 0158 Rcvr/Amp Setup from the
manufacturer's selection in the OFA 8811. I have actually done this manually and it works pretty well with my equipment, but I'd like to do it now with KM/IR to get a little more experience with the software.

So, am I barking up the wrong tree with the file referenced at the beginning of this discussion?

I don't keep old versions of the software lying about, like some of the experts do, but I just happened to stumble on the "import" feature of KM some time ago, and know that it will successfully .... uhhh ..... IMPORT an old KM text file into the current version of KM. To me, that is simpler than trying to track down old versions of software, opening and re-saving, blah-blah-blah. To each his own. Whatever works for you.

I'm not sure whether or not you're barking up the wrong or right trees, but if you want to learn from the ground up, here's what you can/should do:

The page you linked discusses setup codes tuner/0158, 0159 and 0010 for various functions. If you look up those setup codes on this handy-dandy spreadsheet, you will see that they all use the Sony 12/15 protocol with device numbers 1, 3, 12, 13, and 16. To combine functions from all of these families in a single upgrade, you will find (by reading the protocol help of KM) that you will have to use the Sony 12/15/20 Combo protocol, and enter the device numbers in the device number column of the functions sheet. Get your OBCs (by converting the EFCs on the page you linked and/or from THIS AWESOME SONY SITE (maintained by the "other" Rob)) to get any and all possible sony EFCs. Warning: Keep EFCs and OBCs straight! Choose the functions you want, enter them on the functions sheet, assign them to whatever buttons you want, and off you go. You will have built an upgrade from the ground up.

I would wager, however, that you can find a Sony receiver, or Home Theater upgrade already in the file section that will have done the lion's share of this work FOR you. The file you chose, imho, is not the best one to start from, as it uses the device combiner protocol, which can be a bit unwieldy, whereas the Sony 12/15/20 is specifically designed for this. (I'm not saying the Device Combiner won't work, nor that the Sony 12/15/20 will occupy less memory - but my experiments show it is about 24 bytes smaller - , or have any other tangible benefit, except for potential ease of function entry and understanding).

This file appears to be a pretty good starting point, with DSP functions and everything.

I just tried the Import function and it still works with the old files, so the bug that has crept into KM just affects the LOAD button.

As for whether that file is a good choice or not, I'd probably say not, because it uses the device combiner to mix those setup codes, whereas it would be easier to mix device codes using one of the Sony combo protocols. The combo's weren't available when that file was created.

I'll have to research this a little. I see why it's failing on the older files but can't remember why I did what I did the way that I did it!
