Lutron Maestro

1. Device:MIR-600

5. JP1 user? No, upgrading via .wav only
6. Still have original remote? Yes
7. Checked the file section? Yes
8. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? Yes
9. Partially working setup code? [edit] Yes, this one works for all but one button (see post below).
10. Learning remote question? No JP1 cable. Unsuccessful getting codes via PDA/omniremote.

No problems just learning the commands, but they get wiped every time I do a full image upgrade.

I did, yes, but couldn't get the unit to respond.
I tried this one just now though, and it works partially, but has no preset button.

Scene Off = Full Off
Scene 1 = Full On
Master Lower = Dim Down
Master Raise = Dim Up

I just looked into this and I discovered that I included the wrong version of the Lutron protocol in KM, which is why the earlier files didn't work for you. The manual settings file that you tried had the correct version of the protocol in it, which I have now copied over to KM, so version 8.34a is fixed.

When you use the new KM and the files I linked to earlier, you have the ability to use the true Lutron OBC codes, which might prove useful if you want to try searching for the missing PRESET code.

Ahh, I see (I've been using RM exclusively). So I'll need to use KM for this one to work, then?

Actually, the very latest RM can handle Lutron too, but it might also give you the bad protocol code that KM was giving you.

Bottom line is this, the protocol code that you got from the manual file is the correct one, so if you use that you can use either KM or RM to format the device upgrade.

Thanks. Still having no luck finding the right code, though.

To anybody else with the same dimmer: The code for the Lutron Spacer power button (EFC:043) works exactly like hitting the maestro's toggle switch and can be held to delay turning off for X seconds (function not on factory remote)

You might just have to get yourself a JP1 cable, it would be a very wise $14 investment anyway, so you can learn the PRESET button to get the correct code.

I do plan to but meanwhile...

This, in theory, should be the code I'm looking for (found on the entor-net)

But I can't get IRTool to do anything with it. Is there any way to use it as is without using irtool to decode it into EFC codes?

IRTool won't be able to recognise those codes until DecodeIR is upgraded to handle the Lutron protocol and that hasn't happened yet. KM and RM are ahead of the game this time.

I will decode them tomorrow by hand and let you know what the correct codes are.

The OBC for the PRESET button should be 188. Here's how I got it...

Now, for the Lutron protocol, the ONE and ZERO times are approximately specified as follows:

ONE: 005A 0000
ZERO: 0000 005A

So, several ONEs in a row will simply produce a longer ON time, likewise, several ZEROs in a row will produce a longer OFF time. Therefore, I will next try to break down the signal into ONEs and ZEROs. The first step is converting each time word into a number of bursts:

Then, you need to convert all the positive numbers into 1s and all the negative numbers into 0s:

Looking at the resulting binary, we can discard 3 and the 3rd repetition from #2 as incomplete learns. Therefore the binary for the signal is:

111111111000100010000100101101110000

The first 8 bits are the "header" and the last 4 bits are the "trailer", which means the data portion is:

100010001000010010110111

Normally, at this point, you would simply convert the various portions of the binary to decimal to get the OBC and device codes, but this signal is encrypted. Each 4-bit string comes from a 3-bit string, where the conversion table is as follows:

0) 000 0001
1) 001 0010
2) 010 0111
3) 011 0100
4) 100 1101
5) 101 1110
6) 110 1011
7) 111 1000

So, let's break the original signal into nibbles and convert them:

Therefore the true binary signal is:
11111111 10111100 10

Where the 1st 8 bits are the device code: 255
The next 8 bits are the OBC: 188
The final 2 bits are a checksum.

So, bottom line, try entering 188 as the OBC in KM or RM and see if that works for the PRESET button.

Whoops, was using the wrong, well, everything (rmdu file, older Rm etc. etc.). That works perfectly, and your walkthrough was very informative! A few quick questions about it:
When notating + and - can you always depend on them alternating, starting on +?
Is that conversion table lutron specific?
and

Absolutely, if you were to logically get two ON times back to back, they simply become a longer ON time, likewise for the OFF times. In fact, that's what happens with the Lutron signal, as the ONE pair doesn't have an OFF time and the ZERO pair doesn't have an ON time.

You better believe it, I've seen lots of checksums and the like in IR signals, but never anything like that before. If you're trying to learn how to decode signals, you picked a beast to use as your starting example.

The official standard for notating protocols around here is called IRP, and I must confess that while I know the format I'm by no means an expert in it. There is a file that the late Jon Armstrong put together of many of the protocols in IRP format, which can be found here: Protocols in IRP format, but Lutron isn't in there because it's only recently been decoded.

Another useful source of protocol information is the following page from John Fine's web site:
