any reason NOT to use the OFA 8810?

I bought the 8810 about a year ago and was just about to use JP1 to set it up, but before I bother is there anything better for under $100?

I have the 8910 now and was switching to get rid of the plastic doughnut, but I've learned to love a good remote more than before so I'm willing to spend a little more $$ if I can find something better.

If I understand correctly, you have an 8810 and an 8910.

So you know better than we do whether you prefer the key layout of the 8810 or the 8910. And you know better than we do how much you appreciate the LCD display (that the 8810 lacks). And you know better than we do whether they're both too big for you to find comfortable.

Outside of those individual preference items, the 8810 is the best JP1 remote out there and most of us here think a JP1 remote is better than any non JP1 remote, even going well beyond $100 remotes.

There is a version of the 8910 that replaced the doughnut with something more functional. So if you like the 8910 except for that, maybe you should buy an new 8910.

I personally think the 8810 is the best JP1 remote considering all factors (LCD, and non skid surface that it lacks, key layout, etc.) But that's just an opinion.

If you like the 8910, you might consider the UEI HT-Pro Plus, which is just like the 8910, but has the non-skid rubberized surface, and includes an IR/RF command center. All for only $24.95 w/ free shipping.

I personally prefer something a little smaller, like the URC-6131 (upgraded for JP1 from Rob), since I am a PVR user. If I didn't have a PVR, I'd probably go with a URC-6011 (also upgraded for JP1 from Rob).

Go see what Rob has available.

Thanks, that is pretty much how I see it too. I like the LCD on my 8910, but the truth is that it is pretty much unnecessary.

you might consider the UEI HT-Pro Plus

hmmm... does that IR/RF center on the HT-pro remote mean I don't have to point right at the TV anymore? If so, that would probably be worth getting it right there. From where my wife sits she always has problems with the IR.

hmmm... would I be able to use the exact same JP1 set up I used on my current 8910 on the HT-Pro? If you don't know, do you know how I could find out? That would be another great reason not to bother with my 8810.

something a little smaller, like the URC-6131

I like my 8910, but it is a bit big and I am a PVR user. How many components do you run on that? Also, do you ever find it confusing since it does have less buttons.

I love my 8910. Had a 9800 for a long time before that. I never had a use for the remote commander though with the 9800. It has to sit in eyeline with your equipment and be plugged into an electrical outlet. So imagine it sitting on the table next to your couch or something. Sounds like you really don't need it.

Although, it is really cool if you are using it from another room.

Not true. You can plug in the included IR signal extension cord, place that iinconspicuously in front of the devices you want to control, and hide the base station in a cabinet or behind the TV.

I have ordered 3 in the last week, each time it arrived the next day, The HT-PRO is very dark remote next the 8910 or 9910.

I'm glad you guys like the HT Pro, but could someone answer my question about using the exact same JP1 set up I use on my 8910?

That would make this a no brainer for me since I can then have two identical remotes running. If that is not possible, I might as well just stick with the new 8810 I was going to switch to originally.

According to this post, the HTPro is just a rebadged URC-9910, which is turn is just a URC-8910 with an RF puck added. They should all use the same set of RDF, which means that you should be able to simply upload your 8910 IR config directly to the HTPro.

BTW -- great thread on this, I almost didn't bother to post my original question at all because I didn't think it was worth it, but it looks like I'm going to be much better off now that I did.

What get's displayed on the LCD on the HTPro? To me the button layout looks the same my 8811 sans LCD.

LCD displays Device(TV, SAT), code,and time. What I like about the HT-PRO over the new version of the 8910, the cursor keys light up on the HT-PRO, where they are painted silver on the 8910, and so don't light up. The HT-PRO light is still RED like the 8910 or 9910.

The HT Pro I ordered just arrived 1/2 hour ago and I can assure you it is 8910/9910 compatible for the RDF and extender.
