Creating an upgrade from semi-scratch

Post by JustinG »

Got a quick question and I can't seem to find it in the faq's. I've got an 8910 which I have taken several upgrade files and manipulated in KM to get the desired effect.

But, I've never done one from scratch. I just bought a Panny 30" WS HDTV tube tv and the 2 panny CT-xxxxx upgrades in Files only work somewhat. I had the wife today call in to OFA and get the remote upgraded using the modem. A new code was added (0650) to the remote and it seems to work.

Now, I know I can suck that down from the remote to IR and see all the EFC data etc., but I need to get those new tv codes somehow into KM.

I tried saving as txt but KM won't open it. So, is there an easy way to export an ir file to KM? All I need really is the new TV device codes because I have my other devices done already. But in IR, unless it is a device you load from KM/RM, I don't see where you can export the EFC/OBC/Hex data. What am I missing? I'm sure a FAQ I missed must tell how to do it.

thanks

You can't easily extract upgrade details from IR to use in KM... the tools don't support that. The only way to do it is make note of the EFC's displayed by IR and manually enter them in KM. You'll also need to figure out the protocol details and device codes to complete the KM setup.

Mark,

I was afraid you were going to say that. Ok, so if that is the case, is this where I get that data?

That is a shot of my current remote setup. It is set for a sony tv, device code 0000. Are lines 0000 thru 0030 the lines that would hold the code data? Are they the ones to put into KM?

If it's a device upgrade, it would be on the Devices tab. TV/0000 is a built-in setup code and IR won't show you anything for it (it's in ROM and the JP1 tools only work with the EEPROM). You can use the devices4 spreadsheet to get the EFC's used by TV/0000 in the RS 15-1994 and/or the TV/0000 advanced code listing.

Ahh I see. So, no way to read the data in IR.

About code 0000, sorry, I wasn't clear enough. That is for the old TV. The new TV is code 0650.

Hmm, looks like this is going to be a lengthy process. Thanks for the info.

If they did a modem upgrade, you will find TV/0650 on the Devices tab in IR. Selecting it will show you the EFC's assigned to each button. If you post the block of upgrade code here, one of the experts can easily tell you what the protocol and device codes are as well. You can then use that info to create your own upgrade for the device.

An image of the Raw Data doesn't really do anyone any good. Go to the Devices tab and look for TV/0650. Select it and click the Edit button. Copy the code and paste it here in a message. Or, Save the file in IR and upload it to the Diagnosis folder and post a link (see the Posting Links thread) to it here.

Yup, modem upgrades overwrite any existing upgrades.

I think that's actually the Protocol ID, isn't it?

yes sorry, Protocol ID. Had a screaming baby in my arms at the time.

the ir file is available here

http://pics.scrotus.net/8910_1-26-05v2.rar

if you don't have winrar, just rename the extension to .zip and extract.

The .zip file worked!

I've created a basic KM upgrade file that you can use to get started. You'll need to delete the TV/0650 upgrade AND the Protocol: $001F from your current IR file and then paste in the new upgrade and protocol code from KM. I'd suggest saving your current config under a new name just in case... ;)

There's a difference in the Fixed Data bytes between the UEI upgrade and the one KM creates. The upgrade appears to only use Device=128 and no sub-devices, so that's how I setup the file.

The file is named Panasonic 30" WS HDTV TV/0650. Let me know if it works.

Thanks Mark. Had a sick kiddo last night so I didn't get to check the thread. I'll try tonight.

I also noticed that on the other Panny CT upgrades they used Device=128. So this will get me started. I think I will also try the codes on some of the other panny upgrades to get some of the missing functions from the 650 code. It doesn't have many of the buttons on the original remote.

thanks again. Once I have a working upgrade, I'll upload to the files section.
