Emerson EWD2004 DVD/VCR combo

Post by johnsfine »

The Emerson EWD2004 DVD/VCR combo is the one on sale now for under $80 at Walmart.

I set one up (without JP1 remote) for my neice, but first recorded all the learned signals (backup for lost/broken remote and in case they're needed here).

It uses Emerson:40 and Emerson:44 for VCR (and some common) commands and NEC1:135.34 for DVD commands.

That kind of protocol mix is quite rare and I thought I remembered it discussed here already, I'm pretty sure for a DVD/VCR combo, and I thought for a bargain one from Walmart. So I thought it would be the same one. But I can't find the thread (maybe I'm not using the forum search as well as I should). I can't find anything about this device in the Forum or the files.

I plan to post an upgrade for it at some point (lack of time now). But meanwhile, if you remember which thread I think I'm remembering and/or you know where this data is already posted, tell me. It's a more complicated than typical upgrade to create and I'd rather not if someone already did. Plus I'm currious how a Walmart bargain device would miss being discussed here or why I remember a thread that isn't there.

John,

There are files in the file section for a Symphonic DVD/VCR combo that might work. The VCR side uses Emerson:40 and Emerson:44. I don't remember about the DVD side. I created these device upgrades for David Carmichael a year or so ago. Hope this helps.

I remember that conversation also and I found the files, the reason you couldn't find them is the brand in the original discussion was "Symphonic". Also, as the files date from 2002, the discussion is probably over in the yahoo archives.

Here are the files:

Those match very closely, so it must be the same device. But there are several functions on the Emerson remote that are missing from the Symphonic upgrades, and a few that might be different (more likely they are the same and whoever built the upgrade just used the name of the 15-1994 button on the functions sheet instead of the name of the Symphonic button).

So I think I should post another upgrade.

One strange thing I noticed while recording the signals is the play and stop buttons in DVD mode both were the same signal. I think I rechecked that at the time, but I'm not certain. I don't have the remote anymore and never tested anything with the DVD player. The Symphonic upgrade has that command for Stop and a different command for Play. The Sylvania TV/DVD combo, and the UEI DVD/0675 both match and all agree on Play and Stop. At this point my best guess is that I did the learning wrong and the Symphonic upgrade is correct about the DVD Play command. So when I post an upgrade I'll get DVD Play from those sources and everything else from what I recorded from the Emerson.
